Help needed, My Garman 765 has lost it's maps. When I turn it on, it will display the message "Cannot unlock maps". Then when I click on tools, settings, maps, "Map Info" is grayed out. Looked (via pc) at Garmin folder and there is a 'gmapprom.img' file there, along with a .gma and .unl file, among others. What can I do? I have performed the latest "update" as suggested per the Garmin website. Thanks in advance for any help.

The gmapprom.img file should be at least 1 GB in size. Please see this link:

SOURCE: Garmin Nuvi 205 can't unlock maps

First, check to make sure the map file is there. The file name is gmapprom.img. It's located in the Garmin directory. It should be 1GB in size. To do this you need to connect the Nuvi to a PC with a USB cable.

Next, please tell me what year of map you have on your unit, 2009, 2010, etc.

Them, email me your units internal serial number. Its a 10 digit number (not the number on the outside). The number starts with a "3" and can be found by pressing the tools button, then system and then "about".

Please email me at sharcnet-usa AT sharc DOT NET

Cannot unlock the maps in my garminedge 705. When i turn unit on message comes up cannot unlock maps

Information on unlocking garmin maps can be found at http://www.fixya.com/support/r6197735-no_detailed_maps_found_support_routing

There's more information there than you need since the article is about garmin nuvi satnavs that display a message "No detailed maps found that support routing" but part of the article deals with locked maps. The principle is the same for the garmin Edge but you'll need to skip to the part that deals with unlocking maps.

Lost all my SA maps on my garman nüvi 200.

Depending on how long ago you got the maps you may be able to download them again.
  1. Go to www.garmin.com and log into myGarmin.
  2. When you're logged in click on the myMaps tab
  3. There you will see the maps you bought and under them the word "Details" in small blue writing. There may also be a message to say that there's an UPDATE AVAILABLE
  4. Click on DETAILS and this will bring you to a screen where you get the option to download the maps again for a limited length of time.
If the time limit has passed your only option is to buy an update. To do this go back to where it said UPDATE AVAILABLE and click on it. Follow the prompts.

Gps has lost its maps, screen says can't unlock maps

There several reasons you may receive the message Can't Unlock Maps on your nuvi or zumo device.
  • Can you press OK and get to the Where To/View map screen?
  • Did you load maps to the unit using the MapSource or MapInstall program?
  • Did you load maps to an SD data card?

If one of the points above applies to you, please follow the steps below to clear the Can't Unlock Maps message:
  1. Remove SD card from unit, if applicable.
  2. Plug the unit into your computer with a compatible USB cable.
  3. Open MyComputer/Computer icon. (Mac users skip this step.)
  4. Right-Click on the Garmin drive and select Open. (Mac users can locate the Garmin drive mounted on the Desktop.)
  5. Open the Garmin folder.1
  6. Locate a file named gmapsupp.img
  7. Right-Click and delete file named gmapsupp.img
  8. Safely disconnect your unit from your computer to see if the Can't Unlock Maps message is gone.

1. Nuvi 1100/1200/1300/1400/1600/3700 and Zumo 665 users will open the Map folder instead.

*If the gmapsupp.img file does not appear in the Garmin folder, please create an unlock file for device.
