Open the case; you'll probably find it contains an old worn-out drive. "Rock Mobile Disk" is just the brand on the case; your seller is notorious for packing used and refurbished drives into cheap, unventilated cases and selling them as "new". They overheat and die very quickly. You might contact the vendor (eBay seller, right?) if they still exist, but the best you can hope for is an equally bad replacement.

Hey guys, im not too technically savvy but thru the yrs ive realized that common sense and simply covering all holes b4 proceeding to complicated and maybe expensive measures, is a very effective way of solving computer problems sometimes. I own a rock mobile disk as well (magnetic whatever hdd inside), its done this b4, but usually after unplugging and replugging the power itd work, this time it didnt ...at all..so I CHANGED THE CASING, and now im backing my files onto another hdd. that solved everything, the hdd IS plug and play for most computers, i think the casing's psu is kinda flimsy, and gives out quick.

Try reloading the drivers, might have to run a search for the product and delete all softwere first, but just try to reload drives and go from there. If nether of these work it may be a registry error wich I can help with but lets try this first.

I have a rock HD2-U2 and can not retrieve data stored there

Hi Philip

I am sorry to hear this... believe it or not, these are the worst drives. If you do a Google search for Rock Mobile Disk, you'll never find the manufacturer's web site. The only web sites you'll find will be either auction web sites or the forums with heaps of complaints about this product. Here's another assumption for your thought: Rock Mobile Disk is a phony company which only manufactures or supplies cheap, low quality casings for the standard hard drives.

To answer your question, sounds like the main boot sector of the drive is corrupted (a known issue with these drives). If Windows cannot see the drive, that means the partition on your external drive is corrupted. In a worst case scenario, the drive itself may simply be dead if you don't hear the disks spinning.
Try viewing this video, which could salvage the drive..

The front LED flashes red & blue when I turn it on. What does this mean?

LED Indicators - LaCie 2big Network
The LED indicators above the drive bays and the front LED indicate drive status and activity.
During Startup
  • Front LED – blinks red/blue until both disks are powered on, then turns solid blue.
  • Rear LEDs – blinks red/blue until corresponding disk is powered on, then turns solid blue.
NOTE: If the device is not able to initiate the boot process following disk startup, the front is solid red.
During Bootup
  • Front LED – solid blue
  • Rear LEDs – solid blue
NOTE: If a disk is failing, both the disk’s corresponding rear LED and the front LED will be solid red.
During RAID Synchronization
  • Front LED – solid red
  • Rear LEDs – The LED corresponding to the original disk will be blinking blue and the one being synchronized is blinking red
  • Once both disks are synchronized, their corresponding rear LED and the front LED will be solid blue.

TURNED ON, HEARD A CRACK SOUND, NOW JUST A BLNKING RED LIGHT? PRIOR TO THIS THE COMPUTER WORKED FINE!---MONITOR WORKS ON ANOTHER COMPUTER....I GET NOTHING ON THE SCREEN & THE DISK UNIT DOESN'T...

If the power LED is blinking red, that's usually the PC telling you there is an error. Is it an HP/Compaq? The number of blinks can tell you what the problem is. If you heard a crack sound when you turned it on, I'm willing to bet the power supply went. You can go to the manufacturer's website and look through their Support Information and see what the red LED tells you.

500 GB Fantom Drive not recognized on either of my Macs. Tried Firewire and usb; blinking light turns to steady red.Worked fine for about 2-3 years.

The symptoms don't look too good. Looks like the host controller is querying the hard disk (blink) and not liking the answer - or lack thereof (red).

It looks like the internal disk is defective. Sometimes the disk can be (possibly partially) recovered by disassembling the enclosure and mounting it in another enclosure or directly inside a compatible desktop PC.

Can't MOUNT AND READ THE DATA FROM MY ROCK MOBILE DISK, HD2-U2.It was working fine for a year.  Use G5 Mac, Thanks for the help.

I've had my Rock mobile disk for about 2 years now, and I've just recently had the same if not similar problem... normally the disk LED will light from orange to green in usually about 1-30 seconds after you turn it on, now it stays on orange FOREVER, sometimes as long as 30 minutes, before turning green (which is when it shows up on my PC). I'm guessing this is because it's very low on disk space (which it is)? I'm hoping a disk defragment will solve my problem.
Do you recall it being low on disk space? I suggest leaving it on and waiting, even for several hours, to see if it will finally turn on, and then try using some disk repair software.
