Its sounds like cpu/memory problem. the laptop can't play dvd while doing other things. Try to play dvd while all other application are close, if it doesn't freeze its a cpu/memory problem (inwhich case why should try to buy more memory)

Try cleaning the DVD lens with a cotton swab moistened with isopropyl alcohol. The DVD lens is what emits the laser from the unit. Let it dry and try again. Also try using a different DVD. Let us know if it worked and don't forget to rate me :)

I strongly advise against a unirversal remote as i have had several hundred customers come to me asking why wont it work on their unit. If you can get the current remote repaired or are able to locate another remote, i strongly recommend that course of action.

The problem is in the laser pickup assembly, to be more specific the laser pickup is moved by the stepper motor which in turn drives a worm gear and one or two cogwheels, sometimes a crack or a flat spot develope in the linkage causing laser to freeze.
