"Wondering if an external hard drive will draw too much power/amps thru the TV's USB."
Yes, it probably would, so you are better off using a self-powered (one that you plug in to a wall outlet) drive.
And even if you got it running, it might crash halfway through a movie or something. But, for sheets & giggles, if you have all of the data that is on the 2.5" backed up somewhere else, give the 2.5" a try.
According to the microsoft site your external hard drive which is the Samsung G2 HX-MU050DC doesn't need any additional software it is automatically installed when connected..Maybe try to connect it to other USB port I preferred you connect it at the back of your CPU..If this doesn't work try to connect your external hard drive to other computer if it still doesn't work. sad to say but the problem is your external hard drive..
If I am reading correctly you have exceeded the amperage for the device and have blown the electronic that give it the ability to operate. You drive will need to be replaced. Data recovery is very expensive. There is no fuse in the external it is all integrated circuitry (SMT (surface mounted technology). You can possibly purchase a new housing or case that has new electronics. you will have to remove the hard drive from the old case and install it to a new external case.
I have tested the LA40C530 Samsung with a 300GB external hard disk and it works well without any issue. My guess is that it should support 500GB as well. I have played video/music/pictures on my WD 300GB HDD.
Before opening the external hard drive, try auto playing the external hard drive, usually auto play recognizes the music files and asks u if u want to play it or not
