Can't get treadmill to run

I bought a used Precor 9.4 treadmill and it worked when I brought it home. It has been sitting in my garage for some time unused. Now that I want to use it, I can't get it to start. I plugged it in and turned it on (black box on front) and nothing works on the console display. I checked the wall plug and it works.

This probably did not happened suddenly right? the problem is not the motor however you can easily check the blue capacitor for peace of mind. with the power disconnected, disconnect one side off the capacitor from the top. with a ohm meter put the 2 probes on the cap,you will ear a temporary beep sound from your meter, then reverse your probes on the capacitor and again a temporary sound that mean your capacitor is good and your motor will run OK.

Your problem is more then likely your run belt and bed assembly. When new, these are coated with a wax of some kind for slipping, has you use the machine wax wears off, and so is the belt. You can see a black rubber dust at the rear of the machine. And so resistance increase when pressure is applied on the running belt.

Just behind the on/off switch where the power cord goes in, there is a auto reset 15 amp breaker that trips when too must resistance against the motor increase the amperage over 15amps. At 7 min/m on your speed setting and if the belt is adjusted correctly with nobody on, the motor pull about 6amps, with someone like me 180lbs, the motor pulls an avg of 10amps with a new belt.

If you have a clamp amp meter you can test it yourself.

2 parts you will need to fix this; 50985-101 (bed assembly) and 36355-101 (run belt 17 X 110) This is real easy to install.

make sure these parts are for your machine model # as they did increased the width of their belt over the years

Since 1998 I had to replace these parts 2 times with an average of 3 people using the treadmill every day. This is a good machine and if everything else is good it's worth it. I paid $300 for these parts, i'm sure if you shoppe a little you can do better.

Have a good one

Is it on an extension cord? Take it off any extension cords and make sure it's on a dedicated 120v circuit. No other items on the circuit. Also, how old is it? Precor made a bunch of the 9.3x series from 2002-2005 with an aluminum tail roller that can cause problems. Check the back roller. Is is silver and non-magnetic? if that's the case, you have an aluminum roller and you need to contact precor. If you're the original owner of the machine, they should warranty the replacement of the parts, if not, you'll have to buy at the very least a running belt and new roller.

it should be a cable that looks like an oversized telephone cable. I can't really tell by the description of the problem if you just can't remember where it plugs into or if you've lost it altogether. There will be a circuit board in the base of the treadmill that will have something that looks like a phone jack port on it. That's where it will plug into. There should only be one port on the lower board that will accept that style of plug.

Testimonial: "This is the exact answer to the problem--after much searching around, I finally found the little box it fit into. the treadmill is up and running. Thanks for your input."

SOURCE: new free spirit treadmill - L5 code what does it mean?

Yeah - the sensor is the problem... It is magnetic... You can find it next to the wheel on the belt - It is fairly small.... There is a metal disc in the wheell on the belt that is a magnet.. As it passes by the sensor - the sensor registers the magnet and can simply calculate speed based on the frequency of the passes... Sometimes the sensor slides too far back and ergo can`t register the magnet passing by - Then you get the L5 error...

I recently bought a used Precor 954i it worked fine then when i brought it home and wired it in with a 20amp breaker and 240 volt im getting error 29 as soon as i turn the machine on any ideas?

Precor Error 29, Excessive AC Input Current Probable Cause 1. The running belt and/or deck are badly worn.
2. Bad lower PCA.
3. Drive motor is shorted or de-magnetized causing a high power demand.
Corrective Action
  1. Check the amp draw using a clamp on AC volt-amp meter during loaded and no load conditions and compare values to a similar treadmill that is known to have a good running belt and deck. Replace the belt and/or deck if necessary. Don't forget, some units have a double sided deck which means it may be flipped over rather than replaced if it has an unused side.
  2. Test unit with a known good lower PCA. Replace lower PCA if necessary.
  3. Test unit with a known good drive motor. Replace drive motor if necessary.

Belt slipping

This is a common issue. Over time the belt stretches. You will need to adjust the tension on the running belt to alleviate this issue. If there is no adjustment room left, then you will need to replace your running belt and deck surface. The link below will take you to the products for your machine. My 933i is tripping my house circuit breaker at higher speeds. I think there is more resistance in the belt (It's never been serviced).

When a running belt has excessive wear, it creates a lot of friction which causes the drive motor to work harder. When the drive motor works harder it will start overheating. If the belt is not lubricated periodically, it will ruin the deck, the drive motor, and cause other electrical problems such as tripping the breaker [after a while, the circuit breaker on the treadmill will need to be replaced.

It is suggested to lubricate the belt monthly. At this point, you may need to replace both your deck and your running belt.

This really sounds like the results of long term use without lubrication or wax between the belt and deck. Chances are you will need to replace the running belt and the deck or flip the deck if it has not already been done. The friction builds up between the deck and belt and caused the electronic components to overheat. The machine is shutting down as a precautionary measure. It will do this only so many times before the electronics are zapped. Start with the deck and belt. Hopefully the electronics are okay.
