When you actuate the "engage blade" lever, two things may occur,
First, a mechanical action, a spring moves to put tension onto the belt.
Second; at the end of its run, actuate a switch (PTF switch) to engage the clutch that moves the pulleys that consequentially move the blades.
if the tensioner is not moving , check if spring has come lose, undone or broken, (more likely in your case) or check the PTF switch.
any other assistance, contact me, good luck.

SOURCE: blades became disengaged -- won't engage

Sometimes the belt can jump off one pulley and cause the problem, follow the belt around all the pulleys and see if it came off one.there may be a belt loosening lever on the lh side of the mower deck, if so unlock it and reroute the belt around the pulley. If you need to replace the belt the manual has a good description on how to do it and should take 30 min with only a couple of tools.

How do I determine why the blades will not engage on my mower

With the mower turned off and the deck at its lowest setting, check the top of the deck for any debris like rocks or sticks. Then watch the top of the deck while you move the engage lever. If nothing is moving, you either need to adjust the cable, reattach the cable, or install a new cable. If you see the lever with the pulley on it moving, when the engage lever is locked on, check the tightness of the belt. If it's loose, that is your problem and it could be a stretched belt.

The mower blades don't properly engage. It appears the blades are turning before you actually flip the lever to engage them. Not sure if belt needs replaced or adjusted or something else is wrong.

This can happen when the engaging mechanism on the mower deck can not move properly. This could be because there is debris on the deck that is causing interference. It can also happen if you have some corrosion on the deck that is resisting proper operation. So, clean the deck, this is best done by removing the deck. It usually is not very hard to remove, just remember what you pulled off and how it goes to put it back together. There may be half a dozen pins to pull and then move the cable or linkage, raise the mechanism and the deck should slide out pretty easy. Inspect and clean the deck. Then manually manipulate the tensioning pulley, this may take some force to do, depends on the one you have but you should be able to do it by hand. Lubricate if necessary. While the deck is out inspect the belt for wear and replace if necessary. Reassemble and test.

I have a craftsman riding lawnmower and the blade engagement is not starting the blades when i lift it. It feels loose when i lift it.

Sounds like you PTO cable is broken. Part # 175067. It goes from the lever on the dash down to a deck mount and hooks to the idler pulley. When you lift the lever, it should pull the pulley and idler arm towards the rear of the deck to tighten the belt to engage the blades.
