Most likely your new cartridge has a damaged head. The tiny bit of electronics could have a fault, and therefore not be read properly by the printer. Try taking the cartridge out and cleaning the head with rubbing alcohol - both on the cartridge and the printer - then put it back in.
If that doesn't work, try a different cartridge.
On this series you cannot bypass for black and white printing. You will have to replace the colour cartridge, but be wared once you've replaced both if your print heads are also expired their warning will come up next and they cost about $120-$150 per set.
If they're still ok you will be back in business, if the message comes up next stating one of your print heads is expired, buy a full set as the messages only come up after the previous is cleared and they all tend to go on the same day.
According to posts on a another forum, you can fix this problem by unplugging the printer, removing the battery or sticking a business card between the battery and its contact point. It should work when you plug it back in.
Your post "...it prints very faint horizontal lines in color..." is indicative that indeed your color printheads are clogged and would need repetitive deep head cleaning. This is of course would require that you keep on cleaning until such time as the faint color lines have turned to legible print.

HP 7110 Printer
The problem with the printer is it does not work, there are flashing lights and the message it gives you is to turn the power on and turn it back on. Needless to say when I reboot the system and unplug the printer and plug it back up, I get the same message, does anyone have any solutions to this problem????
