1 - the motor most have the ability to be reversed. Not all have this.
2 - attached is a picture of an AO Smith wiring diagram label which may help.

You are correct in assuming Hayward won't be of much help. A.O. Smith used to be original equipment on several brands of pool pump motors. Over the years Century/Magnatek took the business away from A.O. Smith, so A.O.Smith bought Century!
Most pool pumps have a 1081 designation on them. It has been a while but I think that means it is rated for continuous duty (24/7).
I'd call a local motor shop, they rebuild these things all day long.

This manual has the wiring diagrams both hi and lo voltage for
part # 8- 142776 -20 gould century 1081m 1 hp , pool pump motor 230/115 volts.... plus several similar motors

115v USA wiring. We replaced our A.O. Smith 312P458 with a Century C524 motor. Century has bought out A.O.Smith and this is the interchange motor. The drum switch has four wires going to the motor (plus a ground). 2 wires are Hot and Neutral in Forward and Reverse (I refer to these as Line)and 2 wires are Hot and Neutral in Forward and swapped in Reverse (I refer to these as Switched Line).
On Century motor, remove Brown jumper wire all together. Hook up as following:
Pin1=Blue, Orange, Line
Pin2=Empty
Pin3=Black, Switched Line
Pin4=Red
Pin5=Switched Line
Pin6=White, Yellow, Line

I can not give you an exact answer as the diagram is not available on AOSmith's website. Generally speaking the wires are a black and a red. It should describe to you the process on the motor nameplate in the bottom right corner. If you are still unable to reverse it, please reply with a comment that includes the motor serial number and I will go to AOSmith's tech support and get the diagram that way.
