Why is this turntable running slow?

It depends which type of turntable it is. If a belt one then change the belt, make certain you make a note of how the belt fits before removing it.

Direct drive turntables are more difficult. As it could be any number of faulty parts that cause it.
A build up of grease or dirt in any type of deck can slow the speed down.

A faulty motor on both types of deck will also cause it.

The turntable runs great for half the way throw the lp and then it speeds up to a 45 speed

Any infinitesimal change in belt temperature would not cause such a change in speed. The speed of your turntable is governed by an electronic circuit and this is where the trouble is.

The cost of a repair is going to be mostly labor which may exceed the value of the value of the turntable.

TURNTABLE SPEED TOO SLOW. IS THERE ANY WAY TO ADJUST IT.

The liely cause of the slow speed problem is the belt. Your turntable is belt driven, like components in your car's engine compartment. As the belt ages, it can begin to slip. Replacement of the belt will probably restore the speed once again. The PX-E860 turntable has been discontinued. There are parts, such as the belt, that are still available. How much longer these parts will be available for remains unknown. If you like the the turntable, you should consider purchasing several belts as the next time you need one, they may not be available or may cost much more.

One source for replacement belts (there may be many others, ie: eBay):

You might also need a manual to direct you as to how to go about changing the belt. The manual is a free (after registering) download below:

Changing the belt on a Technics SL-3 (Linear tracking) turntable

Instructions on installation of your drive belt - this also applies to other brands as well - however this belt is only for the Technics models listed above:
  1. Remove the turntable platter off from the turntable
  2. Remove the old/damage belt
  3. Wrap the new belt underneath the turntable platter - you will see a small lip on the bottom of the platter. Wrap the belt around this lip.
  4. Put the platter back on the turntable
  5. The turntable platter will have small holes, rotate the platter until you see the motor, and the motor shaft.
  6. Pinch the belt, so that it wraps around the motor shaft
  7. Turn on and enjoy!

Too slow?

http://www.archive.org/details/Turntable_Belt_Installation

above is a generic video that applies to almost all belt driven turntables including yours that will show how to install the belt and a few other things.

this can be caused be a new belt being too wide, you may need a narrower belt.
