First of all, lucky you; that is where all the advertising appears. Generally, it disappears on me when I select my own page instead of home - ergo, try selecting "home" from the top menu bar and see if the right-hand content you expect reappears. From the home page you can also select the small triangle on the far right of the menu bar (blue colored on my systems) and scroll down to settings; what you can control is controlled from there.
It almost sounds like your browser is messed up rather than Facebook. Suggest you try a different browser like Firefox or Google Chrome. You can get either one of the or even both them INSTALLED over at http://www.ninite.com.
They changed the display. You can click on the small box at the bottom of the side bar and it will give you the option to see who is online from there. You may be able to change the whole side bar thing in your account settings. Hope this helps.

There could still be bugs in the IE8 version so you need to downgrade your IE version by deleting it from the Control Panel, Add/Remove programs. Also, have you tried using Mozilla Firefox? whenever i have some websites that cannot be viewed to IE, i can with Firefox and vice versa.
Excel 2007 - This is called the status bar, right click on it if it is blank and put click to put a click next to the options you require.
