When you are in your text screen, in the upper left hand corner there should be a little icon that indicates what "mode" of texing. Typically, it will be Abc1 with an arrow pointing up, This means that the first letter that you type will the CAPS and the rest will be lower case. If you hit your pound # key it will change what mode you are in. It sounds like you may be in predictive text mode and you don't know how to use it. If your icon is Abc with a book and an arrow you then you are in this mode. How to use this feature is easy. You just hit the key with the corresponding letter once and then hit the next key until the screen "predicts" what you are trying to type. If you are typing the word "phone" you would just hit 74663 and it should predict that you are trying to type phone. It will give you more options that you can choose from by using your left or right Nav buttons then put it into the text by pushing the "up" button. If you are in the predictive text mode and are used to using the "regular" mode this may be the reason you are sending the message with out meaning too.
Good Luck!!! Let me know how it works for you.

Your firmware is corrupt. Your phone needs to be flashed to the newest firmware. It happens quite often, you are not alone. You have to go to your local samsung service center., or service provider. They should be able to do it right on the spot while you wait. About 20 min or so. If you cant find a samsung service center, or your phone is out of warranty, try finding an independent cellphone shop. They should be able to do it as well, they may charge anywhere from $40 to $60. If you still cant find anywhere to get it done, look in my profile, and im sure we can help ou out. Before you should do any of the above, try a master reset

Look for the numlock light somewhere near the keyboard. It's the light with a drawing of a lock with a 9.
If it's lit up. turn it off by pressing the numlock key.
Turning it back on will activate the number keypad (consists of 9-11 keys in the middle of the keyboard). So instead of getting letters, numbers appear.
Hope this is your case. Kindly rate me if the issue got fixed.
