Problem upgrading CPU

I've been trying to install an Intel core 2 duo e6700 on my eMachines W3619, when I try to start, everything but the power light turns on and nothing comes up on my monitor. When I put in my old processor, everything works fine I have the latest BIOS installed and flashed. Also, with the update my fans have been running at full speed and I cant find a solution. My motherboard is an ecs 945gct-m3

    UPDATE: BIOS is now updated, problem is still occurring and now my fans are running even louder than last time.

Try to update the BIOS with the old CPU in, if not the new CPU could be faulty, yes I know it's new but it is entirely possible

This could be a few things though if you have already checked the memory and HD. The next thing I would tell you is that you should check the cpu. Also make sure that everything in the BIOS is set to the default settings when you start it.

Okay, sounds like your BIOS upgrade went south. First off, re-install the original BIOS. Usually you back up the original before upgrading. Either that, or d/l the original BIOS from emachines.com. Once you've got the BIOS working, try starting the system. I'll need to know more to help you from there.

I would recommend rechecking your connection to the motherboard. All wires from the power supply to board and making sure the front panel switch connection are correct. Also, make sure the power supply is compatible to the motherboare. even though a 20-Pin ps will connect to a 24-Pin board, it still does not work. Good Luck

If you get nothing but a blue light and no video at all it sounds like you have a bad power supply. They are easy enough to check and replace but not for a first timer. If you know someone who knows more; get a volt meter and put it on the DC scale. Unplug a power plug to a drive or find one that is not used. Measure the Yellow to black and then the red to black wires. You should get 12 & 5 volts respectively.

Cpu upgrade
Hi Keith... here is all I could find on this machine, I assume this is how yours is set up. Component details are almost impossible to get on E-machine units, they just do not provide them.
  • Processor Intel Celeron D 356 / 3.33 GHz
  • Memory 512.0 MB / 2.0 GB (max)
  • Hard Drive 120.0 GB - 7200.0 rpm
  • Operating System Microsoft Windows Vista
First, you want to check to see if your proc even can be changed; many of E-machine procs are permanently attached to the motherboard and cannot be removed; this is the cheapest way to manufacture a computer, and E-machines is bottom of the line quality computer (no insult intended, just fact). Since I don't know what CPU socket the T3604 has I can't tell you if the Intel CPU would fit it. Next, I don't know what the Northbridge is running at; if it is less than 1066 there will be a bottleneck and there is no significant gain. At this point, I suggest that you not spend a lot of money on this, better to save and build your own computer. If you are a hardcore gamer looking for high framerates you really don't want this machine. Better to load in more RAM if you have no other options. Here is something I ran across:

Oh boy, you're in the same boat i'm in with my dad's HP asus based OEM board. You're max choice in a regular core 2 duo is the E6700 @ 2.66ghz with a 1066 FSB (Front side bus). Reason being is likely identical to my situation. The board likely only supports a "conroe" core. It can't handle the "WOLFDALE", otherwise they would list higher ghz for an E6700. The E6700 is also available as a 3.2ghz with 1066mhz FSB, but its based on 45nm process, which requires different power regulation from the board. if you were to put in the wrong chip, you get nada. Not even POST errors from what i've read where others have tried and failed.
Unfortunately, E6700 @ 2.66ghz are a little rare, but they are on ebay for about 80-100 bucks, and various other places. Search for "E6700", but be careful to avoid the 3.2ghz's.
The only other choice for max is the Core 2 Extreme X6800 @ 2.93 ghz. This processor looks like its about double the cost to the E6700 though. That's a lot of extra money to get only .27 gain in ghz though, IMO, though there could be other reasons to go extreme, like availability. There might be more of them! The same logic applies here. Stay with the 65nm process, and 1066 FSB.

Put the old CPU back in and see if it boots - if it does, then the new CPU is bad or requires a BIOS modification - flash upgrade.

You could go with an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor #E6700 that runs at 2.66 Ghz with a front side bus of 1066 Mhz and 4 Mb L2 cache, or you could go with an Intel Single Core Processor #670 that runs at 3.80 Ghz with an 800 Mhz front side bus and 2Mb L2 cache. 1333 FSB processor ( E6850 ) on a 1066 FSB motherboard, DDR2 667 memory
Hi proenza. you're making good sence! You're D945GCL MB should be able to run 1066 FSB. Not 100% sure you're memory will keep FSB up to 1066.
Here's the trouble though. The Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 will not run on the Intel D945GCL motherboard because it is not supported. Look here at Intel's web site. Supported CPU's.

In order to get 1066MHz (CPU can run at), you'll also need the memory support at 800MHz. The D945GCL MB can only run DDR2-667MHz.
Many people buy a CPU to run MB's specs (1333MHz) just to find the same MB does not support DDR2-1066MHz or DDR2-800MHz. Motherboard Mfg's are lagging. DDR3-1333MHz is out there now to support the 1333 MHz CPU FSB.

Your current motherboard is an mATX form factor. I recommend staying with that form factor for your new motherboard if staying with your current case. When upgrading to the new board you choose don't forget that you may need to upgrade the power supply unit also. You should upgrade to either a socket AM2+ board with dual core amd cpu or socket 775 board with Intel Duo Core2 cpu.
