I bought a power adapter for the camera, but it doesn't seem to work without batteries in the unit. If I use the batteries alone, I will eventually get a red blinking light at the back of the camera,...

Because the camera is what is technically known as 'Portable'and is designed to work purely from the internal battery. the Power Adapter merely charges the internal battery

Low Power Warning For Full Charged Camera Battieres

I have noticed that, some users asked that, there old cameras always display low power warning for full charged new batteries, or there will be a low power warning after only taking 5-6 pictures.

If you have met this question (I wish not), I'd like to share the solutions.

The this problem are so common for Canon PowerShot A series cameras when you try to powered your camera by Ni-MH batteries. This is because that, the camera judge the battery is power off by voltage of the battery. And if you use Ni-MH batteries for your camera, the Ni-MH batteries' voltage is lower than the Li-ion ones and close to the camera's judge voltage of low power, so the camera will warn you to change a new battery.

So if you use Li-ion camera batteries this questions will be solved simply.

From http://www.pda-battery.ca/camera-tips/digital-cameras-low-power-warning-for-full-charged-new-batteries/

When i try to turn my camera on it flashes a small red light and then it won't turn on, how do i fix this?

Hi,

The Red indicator flashing in the Camera may be the Access Lamp or the Power Lamp. The Access Lamp is located below the Control buttons and the Power Lamp near to the power button. If the Access Lamp is flashing, it indicates that the Camera is accessing the Memory. Do not remove the Memory Stick or Batter while the Access Lamp is lit.

If the Power Lamp is flashing, it indicates that the Camera is turned on. If the Lamp is lit in Red it shows that the Battery is not having enough charge. Insert new batteries or charged Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries to resolve the issue.

You may also try power resetting the Camera. To power reset the Camera, remove the batteries from the Camera and then press and hold the POWER BUTTON of the Camera for 15 seconds and then reinsert the batteries after 1 minute and check if the Camera works normally. If the issue persists, service may be required.

Thanks

When using the camera the camera powered from the Sony AC-LS5 AC mains adapter, or with the Sony DCC-L1, DC power adapter, the camera auto power function is deactivated whilst the camera is connected to the power supply.
