When starting the cycle the motor just hums, the hot water external tank is on but does not fill the dishwasher with water. The main motor under the unit seems to not turn at all.. I don't know if it needs oil or the bearings are gone.. I would like to try and use the dishwasher or at least try and repair it.
SOURCE: Dishwasher fill with water then just hums
the hum is probably the main pump powered up but not turning. the pump is an induction motor and a usual fault is the motor capacitor. try to access it, find the value of the capacitor and replace. it is a cheap part
SOURCE: Frigidaire dishwasher does not clean
the start switch in the motor is probably bad,it could also be the motor relay.if you can get to the motor run the unit and while it hums try to turn the motor.it also could be something is stuck in the motor let me know.

Sounds like a motor problem. Behind the chopper is an access to the impeller, try turning the impeller or the chopper blade and see if the motor will rotate. If it doesn't, then something is stuck preventing the motor from running.

motor is locked up.. if you let it hum faintly for a couple min it will cut out most likely.. thats the thermal trip built into the motor.. the motor assm needs to be replaced..

To tell you the truth, I don't even know what model my Whirlpool is. However, I had this same issue. My dishwasher would fill, but it wouldn't spray the water. I could hear it hum, but the motor wasn't going.
After no success finding any ideas online, I had to call out the repairman. Well, 5 minutes and $109 later it was just a simple matter of the motor being stuck. Apparently this is a common issue with GE, but not as common with Whirlpool. Just a seal that gets stuck if you don't use it for awhile (even though there hadn't been any long stretch for me). He reached in/under and turned the motor a bit over a half rotation before it broke loose. It fired up... I wrote the check ... and he left.
He advised me to run the washer on the rinse cycle at least once a week.
Hope that helps someone.
