This scanner has done 1000's of slides and negative strips. It now (occasionally) grinds and stops...also randomally scans at a very low size 44kb. Fixable or is it time to buy another?

Check the lock position underneath your lid-located in lower right corner. The lock on the transperancy unit tranportation needs to be unlocked (moved to the right).

Clean the glass surface with Iso propyl alcohol (Industrial grade is enough). Dont use any solvent. Just for immediate usage, you can use your aftershave and clean. Clen with a soft cloth.

SOURCE: grinding noise

The most common problem is that the pulley breaks, you might be able to see it through the glass. looks where the belt goes, and see if the pulley is broken.

also, some people forget to unlock the locking mechanism when the unit gets moved, the locking switch is on the side.

Will not recognize 5th image on negative strip because 4 and 5 overlap (slight double exposure). How do I scan 5th image?

I inserted my negative holder in backwards on my Nikon 5000 35 mm scanner. Then I could get the last (5th) slide scanned. But I can not get the scanner to work on my new IMac because of no working driver. Silver Fast has no drivers for the Nikon 5000

HP OfficeJet 6110 (4 years old) makes short grinding noises during printing. Occasionally the printer stops and asks to have the door opened and the jam cleared. The problem is gradually getting worse....

Try first to clean the encoder strip. It's the clear strip behind the printhead. Either use a Q-tip dampened slightly, or small towel. Don't apply too much pressure though, it can come off and they are hard to put back.

Sharp AL-1340 Scanner hangs up, grinding sound, with E-7 code

The scanner rails will dry out. Try a drop of oil on the rod the scanner travels on. There are two bushings that slide along the rod/rail. Good luck.
