I don't think you can. The USB port is meant to go out of the tablet and the charging port brings the charge in. Unless the Azpen is different from many other tablets.
HDMI won't charge a tablet as it is used for output to a display like tv it is not an input. port. USB is a way of charging as it has dc voltage on it. that charges devices.
As soon as you can't use the input device, you can't setup any connection. The best this for you, and I think the only thing, to get your data from the Pad, is to connect it to a computer via USB and hope you can acces your files.
I would definitely follow your friends advice. If they are under warranty, you should be able to get them fixed. If the battery can come out of the tablet, you can use a universal charger to charge the batter, but I am assuming it doesn't.
If you know how to solder, then you could replace the port yourself, but this is risky, so getting pro help is the best bet.
If I am understanding you correctly. You were trying to charge your tablet with a USB-type power cord, and connected the power cord for a different device.
It then sounds like you attempted to use the actual AC adapter for this same wrong device in the power slot for your tablet. Surprise ! You broke it.
