I have a engine on a jhon boat its a jhonson sea man 1 to 2 hp 1970-1990 and it runs good for about a half hour then it cuts off and still will run but not for long is it 2 cycle or do i need to put oil in it if so where

Mix 16 oz ooutboard motor oil in the gas appox 5 gals, 50 to 1 ratio If you run it with out oil in gas you may have burned up the piston, take a compression test you should have 80 to 100 lbs Jim F

new models have more torque and are more economical to run and are 4 strokes ( 2 strokes are now ******* to sell from dealers )
That gives you advantages over the 2 stroke versions
However depending on your financial situation, having the sacrificial plates replaced, a compression test done , and a full service on the fuel system may give you more hours of reliable operation
Talk it over with reputable dealers as there are deals that can be made and possible trade-in offers that can be enticing
there should be a manufacturers plate attached to the hull of the boat with a number of passengers it can carry and the max hp motor allowed to be fitted
talk with boat shops as they will know the approximate hp for each make of boat and length
while it may be attractive to fit big hp motors to small boats , it in fact makes the boat less sea worthy and makes capsizing easier so get the advice right from the boat shops
It sounds like you have a pieces of dirt in one of the carburetor jets. When you load the engine it can't get enough fuel to stay running and stalls out.
Check the torque on the head bolts. I can't tell you what it is, been a long time. If they are good, run it till it dies. Then check for spark at the plugs or coil/s. No spark replace the coil/s. My guess would be coils. But I have seen the head loosen up.
the culprit is the CDI is receiving a signal from the coolant temperature switch indicating the engine is overheating and has switched the ignition over to LIMP HOME MODE.
because the engine is cooled by lake/sea water the thermostats brass plunger becomes gummed up with salt / moss / algae buildup preventing it from opening fully or even opening at all
You will need to compare both engines wiring diagram. These engines would bolt to the same intermediate housing over an astonishing wide range of powerheads.
sounds like the air bypass valve may be stuck ,try pulling off a small vaccum line. the valve is used instead of a choke plate. when engine is cold it bleeds air around the throttle plate raising the idle.
