Primer bulb won't reinflate on Craftsman weed eater after replacing fuel lines

I replaced all the fuel lines on my Craftsman Model 316.791890. The primer bulb worked perfectly and the unit started on the first pull. After finishing about 2/3 of my job, it suddenly stopped running. Now when I push the primer bulb it will not "pop" back out like it is supposed to. I noticed that when I disconnected the fuel line from the primer bulb, it "pops" back out. Any ideas?

Sounds like bulb not seated well...check to make sure it has all seals in place. Some pop in, some seal with a rubber seal.

Check the fuel lines for cracks/breaks. If they are o.k., then:

You willneed to disassemble the carburetor and spray with carb.cleaner. Makesure the small screen is free of debris.(Should be able to see daylightthrough it.)

Use a Den Tek Brush, (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=165357&catid=1152),to clean the small portals in carb. These portals can become blocked. Reassemble and start.

If the carb. parts are more than 4 years old, you may have to replace them.

If you need further assistance, just let me know.

SOURCE: I have a poulan 445 weed eater. My problem is the

Hi mistaloophol...

Sounds like you have dirt/debris in your carburetor jets or fuel passages.
Check/Clean/Replace your fuel filter if you have one, normally they are located in the fuel tank of weedeaters.
Also make sure you are using fresh fuel...and oil mix if your using a two cycle mower or weedeater with the oil to the right mixture and not too much oil as it can cause hard starting.
If the mower/weedeater is over a year old, then I recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit, because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
Sounds like you will need to clean the carburetor or replace your carburetor internal rubber parts like the diaphgram and O rings.
I recommend that you use a laquer thinner type cleaner to clean and dissolve the laquer build-up in the float and needle jet passages.
Be sure to remove all plastic and rubber parts before using the laquer thinner because it can dissolve the plastic parts and render them unuseable.
Be sure to use compressed air to blow out all the fuel and air passages.
Be careful when blowing out the passages, because there are sometimes small rubber type seats in the bottom of some of the passages.
Sometimes you can get by with priming the carburetor or using starting fluid and letting it run a few times like that and it will flush the gunk out of the jets, but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
Keep in mind that the float for the carburetor must be level when you go to reassemble the carburetor or follow the instructions you get with the carburetor kit.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, you will first need to lightly seat the jet screws.
But before you lightly seat the jet screws count the number of turns it takes to seat the jet screws from their original position.
Be sure to mark the turns down on a piece of paper.
That way when you put the jets back in, you know to lightly seat them first and then turn them back out to their orginal position before you started.
Once you have your carburetor rebuilt that should solve your problem.

SOURCE: My Craftsman 17cc gas weed trimmer wouldn't start.

Hi There, Check the primer bulb for tare or pin holes. Replace it. Check and clean carb jet it maybe plugged with debree. Also check for spark which you didn't say. Replace with correct plug.
Note; Do not use strong cleaners on rubber seals (O rings and gaskets) They dry up and crack.
If needed use a dabble of grease on seals

Testimonial: "Thank you. I had to merely add more gas to tank & bulb siphoned fine. Changed the plug and bingo! It started & runs great. "

I have a craftsman bushwacker weed eater 23cc 18inch my dad bought it btween1999-2000. I need a fuel line repair kit and a primer bulb kit.

Fuel line is generic. Any small engine shop has it. You just get the same diameter as original. Replace the fuel filter in the tank as long as you are messing with the repair.
Primer bulbs on obsolete engines are difficult to find. A Model# would help. Maybe.
eBay has a bunch of them ( 660 under 'prime bulb craftsman' ) and you might find one there.
Your small engine shop might help with the bulb. They usually want Model and Serial # and they are set up to find parts that way. It would require them taking initiative and looking for one that would fit.

If it's the one that comes 'out' of the primer bulb it is the return line that goes in the fuel tank.

Replacing fuel lines on ryobi weed eater, need

This is an ongoing issue for users, and rightfully so. Small diameter line out of fuel tank (has filter in-tank on end) connects to the side of the carburetor that has the fuel pump....that is the cover without the hole in it. Other larger diameter fuel line out of tank connects to the longer nipple on the external purge/primer bulb. The bulb "pulls" fresh fuel from the fuel tank to the carb and then out of the carb to itself, where it then pushes any air/old fuel back into the fuel tank. The remaining larger diameter fuel line in this setup goes from the metering chamber (has cover with writing on it and a vent-hole) side of the carburetor to the smaller nipple on the purge/primer bulb. Years ago on 2-stroke trimmers, primers were not even used,...you choked the carb with a slide lever and gravity let fuel enter the carb from above...a few pulls, a "pop"...slide it off of choke and away you went.
If the purge/primer bulb is on top of the carb...small line from carb body to small hole in tank with filter. Larger diameter line goes from the bulb on the fuel pump side of the carb to the larger hole in the fuel tank where the line is held in place with a nylon nipple connector that keeps the line from pulling out of the tank.

  • The filtered hose from the fuel tank connects directly to the carburetor input connection.
  • If the saw is equipped with a primer, the output line from the carburetor connects to the suction side of the primer bulb (once the bulb is collapsed it draws fuel from the tank through the carburetor to refill the bulb as the bulb reinflates).
  • The pressure side of the primer returns any excess fuel to the tank as it is depressed.
