I havent used Canon 2580C and hence cant comment on Scan Panel. But you can download SU5000 or Captureperfect 2.0 from Canon website (http://software.canon-europe.com/). This is easy to use and probably offers more features as compared to ScanPanel. Canon 5010C is a higher model as compared to 2589C and Captureperfect may offer better user interface.

First make sure scanner is recognized in computer for that make sure in device manager there is not any ? mark or yellow ! mark. Uninstall all usb drivers from device manager also from control panel->add remove programs uninstall scanner software then reinstall then you can use it again. Very likely it is the software that you are using. I would run virus scan like Mohan suggested, and then test again. If the problem is not a virus, then I would uninstall the scanning program and reinstall it...or contact the software manufacturer if you have a maintenance agreement with them. There is a good free downloadable high speed document scanning software available if you want to load it and verify that it is a software problem.
There is a minimum size required for a page to be scanned. Please ensure that your sheets exceed that. (2.2: x 2.8")
