I recorded a video through ManyCam and about 5 minutes in my friend accidentally knocked over th laptop which caused it to topple to the floor and turned off the laptop. Since we were in the middle of recording the video I assumed this was going to cause a problem and now when I attempt to open it in Windows Media Player I get this dialog box, "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." I have looked on here and attempted to download and play it in Vlc media Player but it just doesn't work. Is there anything I can do with this or is it pretty much lost?
It Happened to Me as Well. And Thanks Anyway People But EVERYONE is Missing what He Said so Maybe I can Explain it. (Take a CD for Example: It WILL NOT play on a CD Player unless you Finalize it First - aka: wav file - Now imagine that during finalizing CD, the COMPUTER Locked Up in other words NOT Finishing the Process) This is what Happened in his case as well as Mine. But I WILL Fix it. Give me another day !!
Take another video and don't drop your gear. The mishap obviously ruined the original.

What codec does it give you or show you a error on?
SOURCE: Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The
Have you tried the file with another player like vlc or power dvd etc? If not try it.
If the problem is codec issue, installing codec pack will definitely fix it. You can install codecs pack like acemega codec pack, klite mega codec pack.
If you need them, download it from here..
Klitemegacodec pack
(Open the page and select anyone from the list to download)
install the program and restart your program, and again play the file which wasn't playable on the Media Player.
Good luck.

Since your question is not so clear, I have to assume myself that pictures and videos saved on your phone can't play on your computer after they are transferred to your computer. The message simply means that the codec installed on your system does not support the media type that you are playing. If you don't have any other player installed on your system you have to try with this one Vlc media Player (click here to download). Download it, and install, now open the downloaded files (video or pic or audio) using this player. Hopefully that should work. Alternatively you can use this player instead of Windows Media Player, but on the other hand, you can still play those files using Windows Media Player. The only thing you need is to install a codec, like Klite megacodec packs, Acemega codec packs, etc.. Click here to download Klite mega codec packs Download, Install and restart your computer, now you'll be able to play any type of media file using your windows media player and other players.
If you have problem, let me know.
Good luck.

It means it is a file type that WMP does not recognize. Download the VLC player here http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ it plays anything.
You can always download Manycam and install it. Go to
www.google.com and in the search box type: "download.cnet.com"
(without the quotes). Click on the link to go to the site. When the
site opens look down on the left and you will see a gray area that says Find
Software. Type "Manycam" (without the quotes) in the white
search area then hit the search mirror. When it brings back your results
look for the one that says ManyCam Virtual Webcam. Down load it and
install it. Make sure you remove the check box on any junky programs it
would like to install. You only want to install ManyCam, no additions
whatsoever during the install. ManyCam is totally FREE and easy to use,
and you will always know where your webcam software is.
You can go to their website and read up on how to set it as the software that runs you video call. http://www.manycam.com

okay, well I was really hoping for an actual answer that I couldn't give myself. I know why it happened. It is a video that can't really be rerecorded so I was wondering if there was a way of fixing it or if because of how it happened it is all lost.
