Unfortunately these where designed to fail. I owned one, I could take it apart and clean everything and make it work again, eventually it stopped working completely tho
It's possible when you took the lid off one of the wires has come off a switch or the field. It could also mean the motor has gone. Recommend you get it checked out.

you need to pull apart gear housing - the final shaft has no bushing and seizes sometimes - take apart use emery cloth to remove corrosion and re-lube with heavy grease - good for a few more years - I've done mine several times now.
I'd check the cruise control switchgear. The contacts are probably dirty. Take it apart hit it with some WD-40. Light rubbing with a pencil eraser will clean them up too.

The ck engine light came on because the speedo stopped working. The computer knows the vehicle is moving but does not see it. If it is a manual transmission most likely the plastic speedo drive gear came apart and needs to be replaced. Or the cable came apart. Same goes for an auto, but the speed sensor is easier to replace. In the manual you need to take the unit apart.
My rear blower motor stopped working and my Brother took the unit apart. He found out that the fan blade had seized up the unit. After he took out blade and sanded down blades, it worked fine. However, I am not sure about your front unit. Good luck.
I had the same problem with mine. I took it apart and inspected it. Mine was a loose connection and after some fiddling with the wires the laser came back on. Put it back together and haven't had a problem with it since. Hope it helps.
