First of all, I am surprised that so many people has the same problem, which is very likely related to the power adaptor failure. I am glad that I saw this thread. Following the suggestions, I checked a local RadioShack store. Unfortunately, they do not have any of similar specs. Then I went to Fry's and got one adjustable power adaptor with interchangeable tips and 2500mA rating. Unlike typical adjustable adaptors with 4.5V and 6V, this one has 4.2V, 5V and 6V, and the 5V works! Even though it is a bit more expensive ($18.99+tax) than the one from the web ($9.99+shipping), it is the quickest solution for me. I am happy that I did not spend $79 for a new gateway.
SOURCE: modem power adaptor
On the bottom of the Modem, it usually lists the type of voltage/current ratio, for example, My modem is a 12VDC in, output is .75A Through the modem. Each modem has its own power requirements. Therefore if they dont match, you have the chance of either underpower (which means no use) or overpowering (and killing your modem permanently)
Best suggestion si the same as above by cnavarro, Buy the Right power supply for it, dont just try anything. get the matching one. Otherwise it will be Incident A or Incident B. Neither would work well, and you would end up buying a new modem all together.

You can try upgrade the firmware of the device first and then reset to factory default.
