Can i use one of those BIG spools of thread to sew and, if so, how do i do it? Mary Porretta

I use serger thread sometimes on my sewing machine if I don't have the right color. If you have a spool pin that is vertical, just cut a plastic drinking straw that is tall enough for the thread spool and put it over the vertical spool pin. Sometimes I have to cut a circle out of felt or styrofoam to put under the spool so it will turn easily.

Beware though that serger thread is usually pretty linty so it will create more lint in your machine. You may not want to do this too often.

You can also put the thread spool in a coffee cup and place it behind your machine on the table. Or, if you are industrious, you can create a free-standing spool pin with something as a flat foot and a thin wood dowel. Or you can purchase a free-standing thread holder.

How to replace a broken spool pin on a brother xr40 sewing machine?

Search for:

Make Model replacement parts

Vendors like Sewing Parts Online may have what you need. If not, you may be able to fashion a replacement using a cut-off chopstick, a plastic drinking straw, etc. Some machines work just as well with a stand-alone thread spool set off behind the machine. Sewists sometimes will set the thread spool inside a jar behind the machine.

How to change my spool pin

Some spool pins pull out, others have skrew threads on the bottom, yet others need to have the spool casing removed. Depends on your sewing machine.

Search the internet for:

I\'m not sure what you mean by "reel", but if you are referring to the spool pin which holds your thread, then you don\'t really have to have that. I use a spool stand instead. Then I can use any kind of thread without having to buy the little bitty spools. This is just an example of one style of thread holder. It is by far the cheapest way to replace a missing thread pin.

Some people also use a simple cup, and drop the thread inside, so that it doesn\'t unroll all over the work surface. Then thread the machine normally. If the thread needs to be directed to the first spot, a binder clip, attached to the handle of your machine, works really well as an extra "eye" to put the thread through, and secures it quite well.

Get a stand alone spool holder, sometimes the spool pins arent high enough to support the thread or you can try a thread sock

Lost Spool pin and cap for QuikStitch SP-402

Welcome to FixYa. If you have a spool stand, that might work as long as you can thread the machine properly (give it a try!). When the thread is placed on the machine's spool pin, the spool cap keeps the thread in place and helps the thread unwind evenly - so if you are using a spool pin, you really do need a spool cap.

If the spool stand works, you are good to go. If you need to order replacement parts, I've provided a link the manufacturer's website. From there, you can contact customer support and find out if parts are available. If you can't order replacement parts, ask customer service if the machine is compatible with another brand. Another option would be to buy a spool pin and cap at a sewing machine dealer. Take the machine with you and and make sure the parts fit before you buy them.

Here's the link to the site I mentioned:
