2002 Chevy Impala with 3800 engine with gas fume problems- code PO440 and PO442- I've replaced the purge valve and the problem still exists- what to do?

It means there is a leak in the e vac system

Evap leak..... more than likely it’s an evap sensor or solenoid that’s is the problem.

It sits on a bracket. In the center of the bracket use a small screw driver to bend the center piece out away from the valve. Then work the valve off of it. Pull it up to see it. Unplug it and remove the purge lines.

Could be minor problem with vacuum lines leaking, bad gas cap, bad purge valve, etc. Worth fixing is a call based on everall condition of car, but this could be very minor.

Your Code p0442 refers to an emission control leak was detected.
The first place I would start would be to replace the GAS CAP and as for me I would go straight to the dealer and buy it and not buy a aftermarket one.
If that does NOT do the trick :-O now Houston we have a problem it could be one of over guessing 10-20 small vacuum lines that could be leaking. But NO FEAR my money is 10/1 it's the gas cap. And make sure every time you full the tank the cap is tight.
Being a 2002 that cap's been off and on a million times, well almost

This indicates that a part of the EVAP control system is no longer fuctioning correctly. The EVAP system consists of many parts, including (but not limited to) the gas cap, fuel lines, carbon canister, purge valve, and other hoses. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.

A code P0440 could mean one or more of the following has happened:

The gas cap is not installed or working properly
The purge solenoid has failed
The canister is plugged and not working properly

With a P0440 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:
Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the code, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses
Inspect for damaged or disconnected hoses around the Evap purge solenoid
Check and/or replace the sensor
Check and/or replace the purge valve
Have a professional use a smoke machine to detect leaks

CHECK CHARCOAL CANISTER FOR FUEL AND MOISTURE.IF ALL IS GOOD YOUR PROBLEM COULD BE THE PURGE OR VENT SOLENOID POWER CIRCUIT IS OPEN.CHECK THE FUSE.IF FUSE IS GOOD THE GOOD.THE PURGE OR VENT SOLENOID COULD BE FAULTY.

The error code P0135 ,this error code is related to O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1).It would be a upsteam o2 sensor.The upstream one which is mounted on the exhaust manifold. The sensors is located in the back of the engine on the exhaust pipe. You must have a O2 sensor socket to replace it because of where it is located. You can borrow one of these from Autozone.The sensorlooks like a sparkplug with 2 wires coming out the top of it. The error code P0403 , this error is related to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Circuit Malfunction. For the details about this error i suggest you to click the link shown below. This sounds like a possible bad fuel pressure regulator.
Depending on which engine (3.4l or 3.8l) they can be easy or hard to replace. For pics on the 3.4l regulator replacement, see this link...
