Every time I put the casette tape in and shut the receptacle, it immediately beeps and reopens the slot. It will however close and retract if there is no tape in the receptacle

Haha that's crazy, it worked! it's my sons 2nd birthday today and last night when i turned it on i discovered this same problem. i gave it a slap thinking as if that would work, it didnt. slapped it a bit harder, still no luck. in my frustration i punched it repeatedly (3 or 4 times) and now it works!! hahaha can't believe it! thanks for the suggestion!!!! :)
Remarkable, i read the wack it solutions, thinking this was a joke.
I had the exact same problem and gave it the lightest tap possible with the flat of my hand- really light tap- all is fixed.

The strike it method works. Disclaimer: Mine is out of warranty and I had nothing to lose, so I tried it and it worked.
Process:
DO NOT STRIKE THE DEVICE ON THE SCREEN SIDE!
Close the screen, flip it over to the non screen side. With a closed fist, lightly strike the side that does not have the screen. If it does not resolve the issue, increase strike pressure until it does or dies.
Like I said, I had nothing to loose by doing this as it was unusable as it was. It would have cost more to ship it back for repair than buying a new one.

I couldn't believe that I just had to smack the camera to get it to work. It took 3 goods smacks and then it worked. But then I started seeing horizontal lines during playback, so I smacked it again, and the lines went away, too. The wonders of technology.

Mine worked on the first smack. I was about to take it apart to see what was going on. I had it on the boat for the day and it must have an overheating problem.
I was not very happy to try out the solution posted, but decided to give it a shot anyway. I closed the tape tray and tried a few taps on the side where the tape is loaded. It did not work initially. After a few more tries with increasing intensity of taps, it finally worked!!! Amazing.. I can't get this grin off my face :)

Oh, my!! I have been stressing over my 2 Canon zr200 camcorders!!! They both refused to take a tape on the same week!! I have talked to Canon, the camera store and no luck! SO, I SMACKED them! LOVE it!! Saved me $$$$ to record my mini tapes to save. THANKS!

I tried the "Smack" and it worked just fine. I just got back from a Buffalo hunting trip in zero weather and the camera quit working. Glad to see there is someone out there with knowledge of how to fix these minor problems without sending them into a repair shop. Thanks for the info.

Thanks so much to the net forum. My canon ZR200 was happy accepting cassettes only four times. Then it started to reject both new and old cassettes alike with 3 deep beeps. After reading the solution in this forum I gently tapped on the cassette side of the camera. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!! It accepts cassettes now. Praise God!

Man, I haven't smacked an electronic device since we had a black & white TV with rabbit ears and foil for reception.
I am tempted to smack every broken electronic device I have (that is out of warranty).
It may not fix 'em, but it will make me feel better!

Just after posting the problem I noticed the solution mentioned here. I tried it and I cannot beleive it too it worked. The only difference is that I had to give about three slaps since the first two did not do the job.
Giving it a girly slap on the tape side worked!

I just looked around on this site for people who had the same problem and when all else fails, give it a good smack. Tell that damn camera who's boss. I tried it and the atpe was accepted first try! MAybe a loose connection or something?
I tried this and it worked. I posted of my success too soon because although it fixed the ejection problem it now makes a high pitch noise and will not show the video on my tapes. I twill fast forward, rewind, and act like it is playing but nothing shows up.

I have a ZR 200 Canon camcorder and my tape wouldn't load/cassette wouldn't go down to play. I did what one person on here said to do, three good smacks on the side of the camcorder and I'm not kidding, it worked..holy ****.. :) that just saved me $100 repair bill. haha It now retracts again!

Reminds me of Prodigy's song, Smack My ***** Up. Now I know they were singing about their Canon ZR85. Smacking my ZR85 worked great, but not at first. I tried smacking my B up, but it didn't work. So I tried again, no luck; again, and a bit harder, no luck. Was just about to give up when I tried once more, and this time with a "manly" smack (not the "girly" one recommended above), and voila, she's now back on the job! Thanks, all!

During a beach vacation my camera experienced the same thing and after following the Canon web site's reccommendation I had success. simply remove both batteries from the camera (let it reboot) for a couple of minutes then re-insert the batteries and camera should work.
I also tried the "smack it" approach and, sure enough, it worked. Called Canon customer support and they were about as helpful as my cats...told me I should send it in to get it repaired.
Of course, that's about the extent of modern-day customer service. Thank you, Internet user forums!

A couple of gentle slaps on the side (not the one of the screen), made it work again...
I had nothing to loose since it was out of warranty, so I tried and worked on mine as well...

I have put brand new cassettes in...put the used ones in...left open to dry in case of condensation...put a new battery in...
my camera is about 18 moths old and it is doing the same thing. I tried new tapes, old tapes. charged up batteries as well let it dry out for over 24 hours. It was working fine and then we went to change the tape and pow. It will not close up. just keeps saying remove tape.

When a tape is put in camera makes a whining noise, then a long beep before rejecting the tape.
I had the exact same symptons. As suggested, I slapped it firmly and the tape loaded normally. Smacking the unit didn't seem like a wise thing to do but it fixed it.
Same thing here as well. It gives a 'Remove Cassette' message and then will not accept it. I would like to try the knock the crap out of it approach, but I am not sure where to deliver the knock the crap out of it blow. If you have a particular spot where you hit it, please post that.

We have exactly the same problem. Tape won't load, starts beeping. Charged it, bought a new battery, left it alone for awhile...nothing. Will close and retract when there is no tape. HELP!
I have exactly the same problem with Canon ZR300. Mine is only about 2years old and very lightly used and had this problem now for some 4 months.
I tried it and it worked too. We had two Canon cameras, that were both doing the same thing. It worked on both. My son made me laugh when I told him. He said when people send them in to get fixed, there is probably just a guy that sits there all day and smacks cameras. SMACK $100, Smack $100, ... :)
I hadn't used my zr200 for about 3-4 months and the battery was dead. Upon plugging it in and turning it on it said Remove Cassette. Manual was of no use. Found this solution and tried it...it worked the first time.
One more to the list.. Same Problem. A couple of "old-fashioned" slaps and got it to work again...
Holy cow. The smack trick worked forst time! I am on a ski trip with 12 other friends here at SnowShoe trying to review the footage from the day of skiing. I got the same issue... thought it was a dew/moisture issue since I had just brought in to the condo from the cold air outside. But Canon's website was unbelievably not helpful.. I'd type in variosu combinations of "dew" and "moisture" and it'd give me the same list of 13 tips, none of which had anything to do with moisture or dew. So, i typed in "please remove cassette" and foudn this site... I was laughing my butt off telling all my ski buddies this supposed solution. Then said, "I can't belive I am going to try this" and smacked it 3 times on the non-screen side. Tried to put the tape in as everyone was watching... bingo.. worked.. we laughed our butts off. Never have i seen a solution like this before that was actually real. LOL.

I can't believe it. I had the same problem, tape wouldn't load. Tried 3 different tapes. Found this Fonzie fix AND IT WORKED!. Thanks to the person that first tried smacking their camcorder. Now when ever anything I own acts up, I'll just smack it.

Had same issue, would not load tape but would retract just fine without. Fist slap didn't work, slaped a few times on the tape side (oppisite side from screen) and behold, tape loads fine. Try it no matter what I say, to expensive to send back to Cannon.
Ask this though (to play Canon's advocate) did anyone leave a tape in the camera for a length of time right before this happened. I had a tape left in it for a little bit right before (manual says do not leave tapes in device), figure something inside must be getting stuck and slapping it breaks it loose, might have to do with leaving a tape in it for to long between use repeatedly.
Just want to add my thanks for the solution. I thought the days of tapping electronics to induce a fix were long gone. Apparently not!
 Also, I'm  glad I found this solution before my attempts at troubleshooting the problem made this fix unusable!!

Same problem - "Remove Cassette" accompanied by annoying, ear-piercing beep. Two burly-man smack-a-lacks on tape side and it was back in business.
OK, I was having the same problem, did the slap and it worked!
Unfortunately once the tape was in the camera started making a high pitch reving sound over and over again. The tape can rewind and ff but not play?!!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated. I went from incredibly excited to bummed out again in about 3 seconds. Thank you!

I took mine to a repair guy, he looked at it for about a minute, then told me (with the worst bad breath) that I need to replace some do-hicky that would cost about 300 bucks!
Good thing I Googled the problem, I gave it a couple of slaps on the side and now it works great!! and now I'm glad I don't have to deal with a stinky breath repair guy!!

My God, I was so frustrated when in the middle of duplicating tapes to DVD's I put in a blank to capture some kiddie antics and the same problem started happening. Being as close to Christmas as it is this was depressing, but a solid smack solved the problem.

when ever i am loading my casette it says to eject it immediately.it beeps and ejects
When I insert tape, the camcorder beeps and does open up the compartment immediately.
Same thing--it worked the other day, but today it said "remove cassette" and it wouldn't close again with a cassette in it (I tried several times). However, after viewing the "solution" to hit it a couple times, it now retracts again. Go figure.
