The needle threader on my NS-50 has suddenly stopped working. It won't even swing the hook around to the needle to thread it. I didn't notice anything happen to it, but then I haven't used it for a couple of months and can't really see anything out of place. Any suggestions would be most helpful! :)
Did you try to physically move it to the position? I had to do that on my machine and it works now.

When you push the cassette down, there is a little tiny wire hook that comes through the needle eye to catch the thread. The needle must be in perfect alignment for the wire hook to go through the eye of that needle. If the hook is bent a little OR the needle is bent a little or not all the way up, the needle won't get threaded. The wire will not go through an eye smaller than an 11/90. First thing I try is a new needle that is all the way up in the needle holder. If threading still fails, probably the wire hook is sliding to one side of the needle, not through the eye. The action happens so fast, it is hard to see exactly what the problem is.
Hope that helps. I am not a fan of the cassette system. A side arm needle threader is easier to problem shoot.

Yes, I fix them all the time. You will need very good eye sight as the wire/metal hook is very small. If you get at an angle where you can see how the hook lines up between the metal flaps that hug the needle, the hook will probably be off center. You will need something very flat, but strong. I have use the exact-o-knife blade, in the handle of course, a knife, and a tiny screw driver. The hook has to line up vertically and horizontally. What usually happens is when we thread the needle it did not line up exactly, and putting pressure on the white tab, bends the hook. Bend it back and you are in business. If the threader does not line up horizontally, the needle threader may have slid down the shaft. This take a special tool. I purchased mine at Sears tools. There are 2 screws on the back of the threader. Move the needle to the highest position and after loosening the 2 screws, you can slide the threader up and down on the silver shaft, this is trickier, because the shaft moves up and down and rotates as it gets close to the needle. I use calipers/hemostats to hold the shaft while I line up the hook.

Hi - first, make sure that you raise the needle to as far up as it will go. When you thread the machine, make sure you pass the thread through each number along the path - there is a hook on the threader mechanism that is really easy to miss. It is always a good idea to refer to the book when you are having a problem.
You might also try changing the needle. The threader has a teeny hook that goes in to the eye of the needle from behind, grabs the thread, and pulls it back thru the eye of the needle.
The threader can go out of alignment. If you got the machine last fall, it should still be under warranty. You can call Brother and ask where you can take the machine for repair. Or, you can go to Brother's website and look for information that might be helpful.

Check on the threader and see if the part that goes through the eye of the needle is bent. This is a very common problem. The threaders are becoming more and more difficult to replace. If the piece is bent, you can usually use a pair of tweezers to straighten it out.
