Samsung HLP4663W needs fan replaced.
Apparently I was in denial about the color wheel. With my son's help, I pretty much confirmed that it was NOT the fan. I could have replaced the fan after pulling the boards out to do the color wheel, but didn't want to shoot myself in the foot. I had my son hold the lamp saftey switch so we could turn the set on with the lamp access panel off. Then after the buzzing started, I VERY, VERY carefully reached in & touched each of the 2 fans to see if the pitch of buzzing changed, or if the fans were vibrating at the same frequency as the buzzing noise. It did not change one iota. So I went with an educated assumption that it was in fact the color wheel (just like all the posts in the threads had said). Our set was born in 10/04, and the color wheel was much easier to do than the one in the excellent step by step post that I found elsewhere. The procedure for accessing the fan (if the need be) is basically the same as the colorwheel replacement procedure, as far as removing panels & boards, etc, and gaining access to the fan (you can't do it just thru the lamp access panel). It took me & my son about 2 hrs (including the fact that we forgot to reinstall the colorwheel hood/shroud the first time we reassembled). We also didn't have that jumper to deal with either. HOWEVER, while the picture looks great for the most part, I think I may have to use the service menu to set the color levels correctly. The problem being with the black levels I think, because in a dark scene in a movie, shadows look blotchy, almost rainbowy in a somewhat pixelated sort of way. The new colorwheel came with a little sticker with the new CCA color setting values as well, but in researching the service menu access codes, I read one post where someone said that simply accessing the service menu (even if it's just to see how many hours you have on your lamp, without even changing any settings), will reset all your settings. I don't know if this is a problem for me, as I never changed the settings before, and never had it serviced by anyone else.
