wild guess turn beater as you push in to allow the beater to engage the drive, a little like gears meshing. You should be able to feel it lock into the drive.

Generally the problem is only the beaters. They may no longer be aligned in a perpendicular line and are slightly bent, just enough to make them click. You may have to replace the beaters to get satisfaction.

One of my blades is stuck and I can't engage the release

Make sure your Beater can slip in and out of the Beater Shaft
easily. Do not force the beater onto the Shaft if the shaft is bent.
If it cannot be removed easily by hand, use a soft rubber mallet
(not a steel hammer) to slightly tap the beater so it can be moved
up and down the shaft or from side to side. Then you can easily
turn the beater left and remove it from the shaft.

From Kitchenaid Manual:
To Attach Flat Beater, Wire Whip, or Dough Hook
1. Turn speed control to OFF.
2. Unplug stand mixer or disconnect power.
3. Tilt motor head back.
4. Slip beater onto beater shaft and press upward
as far as possible.
5. Turn beater to right, hooking beater over pin on shaft.
6. Plug into a grounded 3 prong outlet.

I have a Kitchenaid 550 watt 6 qt. stand mixer model #KB26GIXER. I tried to use it this morning and couldn't get the beater blade to lock in place. Isn't there supposed to be a spring and washer...

There is only one pin on the beater shaft to hold the beater in place.
There is no spring or washer on the shaft.

To Attach Flat Beater,Wire Whip, or Spiral Dough Hook, simply
1. Slip flat beater on beater shaft.

2. Turn beater to right, hooking beater over the pin on shaft.

I cannot get the beater to lock in place. The

Hi VBPROSANDY, When you say beater, I assume you mean your flat beater. Are you having the same problem with your Wire Whip beater and dough hook? If you are not, then the first thing I’d do is look inside the flat beater’s attachment well, to see that there is nothing; i.e. hardened food, dough or batter, in the bottom of it that would prevent the agitator shaft and groove pin from seating properly. The flat beater has two drain holes at the bottom for drainage, but if these get plugged it may prevent accumulated ‘gunk’ at the bottom from escaping, and over time the buildup may prevent the beater from seating properly.
If you find the beater attachment well is clean, then from the KA Instruction manual, to attach the flat beater...
1. Slide speed control to OFF and unplug.
2. Slip flat beater on beater shaft.
3. Turn beater to left, hooking beater over the pin on shaft.
Finally, check the groove pin on the agitator shaft to make sure it hasn’t become bent so that it doesn’t fit the beater properly. Pins shouldn’t bend, but sometimes they do.
The beater attachment process should not require any effort as the agitator shaft should easily fit into the beater’s attachment well and easily turn to the left. Your planetary should not move during this process and if it does move it will take some effort on your part to turn it. The fact that you’re turning the planetary means you’ve turned the beater as far to the left as it should go to ‘lock’ it. When you get this far, let go and the beater should fall into place on the groove pin.
Good luck. I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

I need replacement beaters for an old GE hand mixer.

I bought an old GM mixer no. 30M47 with no beaters yesterday at the Salvation Army store. The beaters I have for a newish (ugly) GE hand held beater fit perfectly. I suggest taking your old beater to a store that sells new GE handheld beaters and seeing if the new beaters fit. If anyone reads this and wants me to look up the number of the new ugly beater for them, please say so before I take it to the Salvation Army.. : )
