Yes, all HP Deskjet printer models feature a 'single cartridge print mode'. Just remove the cartridge you don't wish to print with; the printer will automatically revert into either greyscale printing (if color cartridge remains installed) or black only printing (if the black cartridge remains installed). However, if the installed ink cartridge is electrically damaged/defective the printer will display an alert message; it will need to be replaced with a new cartridge.

The printer has detected that you are using a refilled HP ink cartridge.
HP stated on their ink cartridges as Intended for single use only.
If you use it a second time, it would be Not Intended for this printer.
If the cartridge has not expired and was not refilled, you could call HP for a replacement.
You coud also try to remove and install back the cartridge.
Reseting the printer by turning the printer off then on may work.

You will be able to place order for these cartridges on the HP website.
Click on the link to launch HP website and place the order.

When the HP website is open, In the Search on right side top corner type HP 92 and hit enter key.
It will show the HP 92 Black Cartridge ( Add it to cart )
Do the same for HP 95 and add it to cart and later Checkout from top right corner to continue placing the order.

HP 92 cost you $14.99 ( single cartridge )
HP 95 cost you $28.99 ( single cartridge )

no you can't use a single cartridge.

had the same problem
I just kept putting it in and taking it out until the msg stopped.
also sometimes when you see this msg you can push the ok button and the printer will go to correct mode.

Ink-backup mode lets you continue printing with one print
cartridge when the other print cartridge has run out of ink.
Ink-backup mode allows the printer to operate using only one print cartridge. It is initiated
when a print cartridge is removed from the cradle.
Exiting Ink Backup mode
Install two print cartridges in the printer to exit ink-backup mode.
