Several times now my freezer & refrig. stopped working. Ice buildup on back of freezer wall. Especially if there is content in it. The icemaker I think was spilling water down the back (missing the tray) and freezing. Somerown water drains into the fridge (produce container on the R) when defrosting. Also..when I move the temp control in the freezer, you can hear ice breaking up and falling somewhere. HELP! Can this be fixed cost-effectively or is it time for a new one? This fridge is less than 5 yrs old. I have Kemore Top Freezer/Refridgerator. Model #253.78982800 that I bought in 2009.

Here is another suggestion. I have seen refrigerators have this same problem and it was caused by people setting the refrigerator fresh food section to cold. The drain line from the freezer freezes shut and does not have time to defrost and drain the condensate during the defrost cycle due to an ice plug. Several solutions was simply setting the temperature control to 5 for the fresh food section and the freezer section. These are the normal setting for a thermostat.

Sounds like one or more of you defrost coils behind the back wall have gone bad...

You have to purchase the correct coil set for that model, remove the back wall, replace them and put the back cover back in place after emptying the entire contents of the freezer...

Most non HVAC people would prefer a repairman to do it.

the defroster isn't close enough to the drain to be effective. remove the back wall of the inside of the freezer, remove the excess ice. clear out the ice from the drain using hot water and a turkey baster. there is a kit from whirlpool that uses a piece of metal and a screw around the defrost rod, but I found out that a piece of 14 gauge solid core wire with the insulation stripped off works great too. stick the stripped wire into the drain, 2 to 3 inches, and wrap the rest around the defrost rod.

Kenmore top freezer with icemaker, water is running down the inside back wall of refrig.

The defrost drain line is stopped up with ice. It must be defrosted manually until all the ice is gone.

Ice maker stopped working

The laser , is supposed to blink . This laser , tells the icemaker to stop making ice , when the bin is full . Pour about 2/3 cup of water into the icemaker . If it doesn't dump the cubes into the bin , the icemaker is bad . Or , if there is ice in the bin , which hasn't dumped , the icemaker is bad . If the icemaker dumps the ice ( from water pour ) , then look above the fill cup , and see if the black fill tube is frozen . If so , then replace the water valve and turn the freezer temp down slightly . It will take several days for this fill line inside freezer to thaw . If icemaker dumps , and black tube NOT frozen , replace the water valve . The valve , is where the wall water line connects to on the refrig .

Model #ed5lvaxvqoo; ice maker quite working, no water WHIRLPOOL

Due to your refrig having the ice bin on the door , it could be a little bit more difficult to diagnose . Pour about 1/2 cup of water into the icemaker . If it doesn't dump , then the problem is the icemaker . When you open the freezer door , does the laser lite flash 2 times then pause then 2 times etc.? If the lite does not flash , it means the icemaker is in the harvest mode (dumping) . If stuck in the harvest mode , replace the icemaker . If the icemaker dumps the frozen cubes , then the black fill tube above the fill cup , could be frozen , or the water inlet valve is bad . If you feel ice in the black tube ,(water valve bad due to slow drop leak ) you'll need to pull the fridge from the wall , and see if there is a plastic coupling on the tube going up to the icemaker . If not , you should get one in case of future problems . Cut the tube (or disconnect the fitting ) (if you can blow thru it , black tube is not stopped up with ice ) and turn the icemaker off . Turn the freezer setting down a number or two . Go by ocassionally to see if you can blow thru the line . This water line goes between the top of refrig and the inner liner . Bad design because if it freezes , no way to get to it . Can try hair dryer2.gif on top of refrig . I have known it to take several days for this line to thaw .

Refrig not cold enough, ice buildup on banck panel of freezer

ice build up means your refrigerator is not going through defrost cycle. you have ice build up on evaporator which restricts your cold air flow into the fresh food side. check defrost timer, defrost thermostat located on evaporator behind the wall where your getting frost. check defrost heater. it wraps under the evap.

Kenmore Elite Trio makes creaking/groaning sounds

I have a Kenmore Elite Trio and the freezer was making a frog sound. I found the solution.

My model number is 596.75523400. The sound will stop when the freezer is opened. It will stop again when the freezer drawer is open and the light switch is pressed to turn off the light. The ice drawer was full but it had stopped making ice.

Here is the fix in less than 10 minutes using only a screwdriver.
  • Take out the two freezer baskets
  • Remove the freezer door from the two slide tracks.
  • Unplug the icemaker electric connection at the back wall. Depress the clips on the side of the plug and wiggle it loose.
  • There are 3 screws that attach the icemaker to the left freezer wall. Remove the lower screw and unscrew the top two about ½ way out.
  • Slide the icemaker up so the slots slip over the 2 screws.
  • Put the icemaker in the sink and run a bit of water on the frozen cubes until they fall out.
  • Take the screwdriver and check the water inlet hose/pipe for ice that obstructs the flow of water into the ice maker.
  • Re-mount using the 3 screws and plug in the electric connector. Make certain the water inlet tube is positioned thru the retaining hole before you remount the screws.
  • Replace freezer door and baskets.

The refrigerator/freezer isn't cold anymore. The light is one. The icemaker is still running, but no ice. The refrig. side started to go first, then the freezer side about 5 days later. Now it just blows...

Remove back wall cover from freezer compartment. Should have a nice even frost pattern. If large amount off ice buildup is on evaporater than air can not flow through entire unit correctly. This means that unit is not defrosting properly. Check continuity on defrost heater, if good replace defrost thermostat, located as a clipped on device at top of evaporater.
