Fridge compartment is freezing

Disconnect the defrost element and check with a multimeter for continuity. If there is no continuity, the element has failed. If the element is good, check the connections.

There is usually a Defrost Timer, but this uses a Defrost Sensor. Put 'defrost' into the Parts Search.

Its either a bad defrost timer not kicking on, bad main control board or the temp switch. Sorry not much help but the only way to really tell is check with a ohlm meteor and eliminate each part.

there is a flap in the refrigerator side usually near or behind the light bulb the freezer side is thermostatically controlled with the compressor being controlled. On the refrigerator side the cold air comes from the freezer side. when this flap is open the refrigerator will cool continuously, Check the flap or the duct assembly

It is either a defrost timer or limit switch, That's the little clip on device located on top of one of your freezer coils. This is the most common item to die on many newer refrigerators. It is also pretty inexpensive, and easy to get from Sears or 1stsource parts. In rare cases your defrost heater may go bad, but I haven't had to replace one in a long while.

Refrigerator gets cold air from freezer compartment. Either the air flow is blocked by food items or ice, or the recirculating fan is not working.

The most common failure is that the freezer coils get all iced up becuase the defroster timer, defroster thermostat, or heater has stopped working.

When it's running, you should feel cold air blowing out of the vents that are in the fridge, otherwise, the 'air tower' (air vent) is blocked with ice.

If you manually defrost the whole thing, and it runs fine for a day or so, then it's not defrosting properly. If you manually turn the defroster timer, and you don't hear the scorching/hissing/gurgling of the defroster working, then that would confirm a fault in the defroster circuits.

If the fan beind the rear cover inside the freezer isn't running it can cause circulation problems one of which is freezing in the drawers. The fan may not run when the door is open so hold the door switch down. It should be running when the compressor is running.

If you have a side by side model you need to look at the refrigerator compartment wall on the left of the bottom drawer and move the slide control to the warmer/fruit/vegitable setting instead of the meat setting.

My Kenmore Elite (Model 795.7755 3600), less than two years old, had the same problem. One morning I opened the doors to a hot fridge and burning plastic. The light housing was sizzling hot - much of the unit literally melting away. Another hour or two and it could have been much worse.

Called the 1-800 number listed in the fridge. After about 45 minutes of patient talking, I learned that Sears (or Kenmore) have issued what they refer to as a "flash warranty) on the light fixture kit (Kit # 6871JB1423N) which in effect, for this part only, extends the factory warranty from one year to three years. I may even be able to have a factory tech install the parts. Hope it works out.

Bottom line: if you have this fridge, be very careful and monitor closely. An pursue the part warranty!

Boomdog, the problem with your fridge is the temperature control board (where you adjust temps at in the fridge section). I serviced one of these just this week for the same problem! It's working fine now. They'll need to bring a control board with them to finish this job. The part number for it is #8201659. Be glad you won't have to fork over the cash to buy it, the retail cost is ~$165.00. Unfortunately, all of my vendors tell me this board is a factory backorder item. Maybe Sears will have it, maybe not. Also, after the repair is complete, please connect your computer controlled appliance up to a quality surge suppression/arrestor device.
