Map update needed

Free Garmin Map updates can be downloaded within 90 days of purchase or are free for a life time when it's purchased with lifetime map updates.
Software updates are always free.

Maps / software can be updated online by registering your Garmin at MyGarmin.com using the serial number and your name. On this website you'll be guided through the steps to download / install the required web browser plugin to communicate with your Garmin Nuvi.

When connected over the USB cable - MyGarmin.com shows compatible map or software updates. These will be free in the conditions mentioned above.

Note that updating a map online requires a 3Gb download. This can take a very long time and requires a stable internet connection. Also your Mac need to have at least 5 Gb of free space to install the Map.

A Nuvi software update is much smaller and takes less time to complete.

Sometimes it will not all the streets, especially main streets, unless is zoomed in, try the zoom feature in and out, or three 3 d or 2 d feature.

To update the existing map for you Nextar product, please contact Nextar to find out if any new map information has become available. Nextar products are usually pre-loaded with USA/Canada maps, depending on the model. If you need updates

Garmin is telling you to update your Map, its wants you to buy a New Map which cost around 50 or 60 dollars.....your unit will work find for now unless you need the new map 2011 it just has the newer streets and highways. Anything over 2 years old should have a newer Map..

With the gps Off

plug in your gps to your computer using a USB cable (most cameras connect to your computer with the same usb cable)

your computer with detect new hardware ( usb ) a pop up box will come up, minimise it

go to www.MyGarmin.com the Garmin site will detect your pluged-in unit and let your update your Map

It will say to download WebUpDater utility to transfer your map to your gps

Make sure you register your unit with Garmin at that time

It all depends when you brought the unit if they will update the map for free if not you have to pay for the updated map, it cost around 50 or 60 dollars

the site will also detect your model and let you know if updates are available

if there are updates it will tell you to download WebUpdater utility to transfer map to your unit

You can update the maps using either Garmin or other third party maps. The accuracy will depend on how old the mapping data was that is used to create the map. So you want to find out if the map in that area is recently updated. You may also find that a regional map may show the details in some areas where a larger map won't.

To upgrade using Garmin you just go to garmins website

You may find the map update is free or you may update for a fee or get a lifetime update subscription. The gps is hooked up through the usb cable and will download and instal the updates. It's painless (sort of ;-]) and quick.

a map update "may or may not" fix the problem, because it depends on the date of the map updates and when the construction took place.

Single map
If you only want to update your map once you can buy a single map.

You are confusing map updates with POIs (Points of Interest). Garmin does not keep up with restaurant openings and closings, to the best of my knowledge. Updating your maps will give you the latest street information (such as new subdevelopments, one-way streets, newly opened bridges, etc.) but will not let you know that the KFC closed or that the Chalet de Alpina closed last year. Your POI information is current as of the initial programming of your unit. You can enter POIs manually, if you chose to do so, but they will only be good as long as you keep up with them.

Garmin puts out map updates on a regular basis. You must purchase these. The GPS comes loaded with maps that are current as of the date of production of the unit. It cannot "know" when new roads are paved and new subdivision are created without being "told" via map updates. The unit knows where it is in relation to the maps loaded on it by receiving signals from the GPS satellites in orbit. If things change, the maps must be changed in order for the unit to give you correct directions.
