Try re-installing the scanner software - if you don't have the disc you can download it. The scanner is a very delicate mechanism so is easily damaged - if the software fix don't work maybe it is kaput

SOURCE: document jam brother mfc 8460n

if the message refers to the scanner, open the cover of the feeding unit on top of the printer and clean it with compressed air. Most probably an insect got stuck somewhere

SOURCE: how to connect my brother mfc-8460N scanner can't

You will need to use a cable to use the scanner.

Either a USB cable to connect directly to computer or an ethernet cable directly to router, then you will need to install the driver software.

SOURCE: Brother MFC-8460N network printing, local scanning

Yes this is possible. Depending on the type of installation that has been done on the computer, you can even scan documents to your computer as a network scanner.

You can check and see if all the features have been installed on your computer. Click on start, all programs, and look for the folder called brother. If you can find brother you can look for the sub category for Conrtrol Center. From Control Center you can scan by clicking on one of the icons. Like file or image.

If none of this is installed, get your installation disk and install the software, you can do a network installation or a Local (USB) installation.

If you decide to do a Local installtion remember to only plug in the USB cable when promted to.

If you decide to do a network installation, the machine should already be installed on the network, which I assume it is since its being used as a network Printer.

Please let me know if any of this info was usefull, and if you require more info about this.

Scanning directions for mfc8460n

Are you trying to scan to your pc or to a usb stick? We just got one in the office.

If you are trying to scan to your pc you will need to install the software that came with the printer. After you have installed the software you will be able to scan from the printer by selecting your computer name. There are different options on what program opens up. For example by e-mail or a picture viewer.

I had computer problems today and had to swop my hard disk into another computer box. After doing that my Brother MFC8460N faxed and copied but does not want to print from my computer at all. I uninstalled...

Trying connecting the USB printer to some other computer,
to see if the other computer recognizes the printer.

Try a different USB port on your computer.

Try a different USB-device (memory-stick? camera?) into your USB port, to confirm that the USB-port is working.

MFC 8460N giving Toner Life End message

I just solved my own problem. Try it for yours. I had been using several compatible toners for the MFC-8460N with no problems until today, as I posted earlier. On a hunch, I went to the local office supply store and purchased one original Brothers TN550 toner and put it into the printer and closed the cover. Everything clicked. Toner End Life message gone. I then took that Brother toner out and put the compatible one back in and still everything was fine. Am keeping the original Brother toner as a "kickstarter" if it happens again.
