Check the spindles and pulleys for excessive slack movement, also check idler pulley as these have a tendency to wear out

Why do the belts keep breaking on my craftsman 42"Model No. 247.288812 lawn tractor

Which belt? If its the deck belt, you could have a siezed bearing on one of the pulleys or possibly a pulley break or belt protector is out of adjustment.

The tension on the Idler Arm or the proper belt tension is incorrect. Make certain it is the correct belt and it must fit tightly or else the problem with pop up every time. There must be physical adjustments you can do to get a tight belt.

The belt that comes from the engine to mower deck keeps breaking. I've owned the mower for years and I have to buy atleast 12 belts per year. The problen is really bad now. A belt per cutting. I've...

I own a Craftsman rider, DTY 4000, 25 HP Kohler, 48" cut, 137 Hrs. It eats a belt about every mowing or two. Did all the stuff you did. Good luck from Sears. Had cousin who is owns a lawn & garden repair business look at it today. Says the prob. is this - The drive belt pulley (elec clutch) has too a narrow "V" and the angle of wear between it and the deck when the deck is in the lowered (mowing) position is too severe. If you notice with the deck in the fully raised position the pulleys line up perfectly. Then drop your deck and see how tightly bent the belt is downward and it makes sense as to why(my) belt would first roll over then break in a few minutes. The elec clutch pulley is sold as one unit PT No. 179334 $250.00, but I'm sure it would come with the same narrow V pulley. Waiting for word from my cousin. My last Sears Mower. Cannot even sell it in good faith.

My craftsman mower runs fine, but it wont cut. it seems like the blades are not turning fast enough to cut. is this a bad belt, or something else?

check for belt wear *(the edges of the belt look frayed or scrubbed down?) and also look at the belt tensioner for wobbly/loose pulleys.

With the engine off have someone move the engagement lever while you look underneath at the belt to see which pulley is taking up the belt slack so you can then determine if this pulley has any issues.

If this mower is fairly new it is probably just belt wear. New belts are typically 20-30 dollars to replace. Less any labor.

Good luck and be careful!

Need to replace drive belt.Never replaced. 42' Craftsman riding lawn mower. How difficult is this. How do you access rear drive pully

Take a look at how the belt is installed. Then you will have to remove the mower deck and belt from the pulley on the engine. There is probably something by the engine pulley that you will have to remove so the belt will come off. It might be a shoulder bold or a rod with a bolt holding it on. Same with the rear pulley. Then you just have to put the belt on one pulley and watch your fingers so you don't pinch them and turn the other pulley and the belt should go on. reinstall any bolts you removed and install the deck.

Deck belt

Look at the Idler pully on the deck ther should be a Spring that keeps tension on the belt if it does not have that feature on that deck then there is a stay pin missing or the belt has just gotten to big (streached)
