Have trouble loading the vcr vhs tape. Has worked fine for many years, but suddenly will not let tape enter the vcr. Does reset work with unplugging machine for hours? Have never seen a reset button on a vcr; never had this problem before.

If you have a VHS video tape that's playing too quickly then it's very likely that the player you are using does not support either LP or SLP. SLP capable video players should automatically detect the mode and adjust automatically.

Yah, you're going to be taking that in for repair. I worked for couple of years at RCA / Sony / Panasonic / ... and 60 more names - service center. When a VHS Cassette loading mechanism doesn't work - it probably needs loading motor or loading gear, something repaired. At the cost of DVD and VHS combos these days I'd call it Not Worth Repair (NWR) out of the starting gate. At least $50 an hour, at least 2 hours ... that's beyond the cost of a new one.
I had this happen once and all I did to correct it was to fast forward it just slightly or manually wind it past the leader strip (the clear or white part at the beginning). To do it manually, there is a small hole you must insert a toothpick (or something else as small) to push the pin in and then advance it with your finger while holding the pin in. Hope this helps.
The brain in a VCR has a little switch assembly that senses what
position all the mechanical stuff its in. Apparently, the mech is
out of whack which is why it won't let you play. This is a common
problem and any VCR shop should be able to repair it.
we cannot get the vcr portion to work only the dvd player works what are we doing wrong? Have the same problem? Click Here

On some of the DVD/VCR combo units, the VCR output is only available through the RF jack (channel 3), standard video
(yellow) RCA jack and S-VIDEO jack. If you are using the Component
jacks, the DVD side will work but the VCR will not. This is because
the quality of video recorded on VHS tapes is so much lower than
component quality video. Thank you for rating this solution.
Is it ejecting the tape when you set up for timed record, or any record mode for that matter? If so, check for the presence of the record lockout tab in the tape. If tab is there, machine should accept it. If machine ejects tape with the tab present, then the sensor which detects tab present or absent is probably afoul. this sensor is often a small switch.
This tab, by the way, is on the backside of the tape, on the left, looking at the tape from the back.
Just a thought : check if the head isn't blocked ! It should rotate
freely (without any friction).
I had more or less the same phenomenon (my VCR wouldn't accept any
tapes and nothing was activated if I "pushed " a tape in).
The reason was here that the VCR wasn't used for a long time (a few
months), but it was plugged in all the time (heated up the interior).
As a result the head was a-kind-of-blocked. Nothing serious, since I
rotated the head manually my VCR works fine.
