I have a hobart lx18 and when i plugged it in, it started smoking

Now I don't know if its 110 or 220. It looks like the smoke was coming from the relay control board.

I have to asume the wiring connections had not changed since it last worked.
There are three versions. LX18, LX18C and LX18H.
Inspect the relay board for damage. The connections can come loose and melt relays.
It could also be the wash sump tank heater or the booster heater if it's an H. The other two only have a sump heater. If you power it on, and have no water in it's tanks, the elements can glow red hot till they trip the high limits.

$0. Clean the probes. Two in back right corner. Two under the front screen. Use a green scrubby.

If the problem persists, check where the water comes into the machine. There is a screen on the hose that clogs up and starves the machine for water.

Why My Hobart A200 20 QT Mixer ML #104858 Motor Is Smoking?

I think... without knowing that motor... that the capacitor is a start capacitor, and that the start switch may be trying to "start" the motor full-time instead of switching it out of circuit after it figures that the motor has spun up. I may be wrong - that design may be a capacitor-run motor (similar to a three-phase motor) - but I'm betting it's a start-only capacitor.

If you know someone with a capacitance meter, you could check the capacitor - for both capacitance (to be sure it matches the label) and leakage. Easy way to write that one off. Alternatively, you could rig it such that after the motor's wound up you could manually disconnect the capacitor and see what happens - either the motor stops or else the smoking issue stops.

Whatever you do, don't let it smoke very long. The varnish on the windings is only so thick.

Engine smoke

Hi Sean, I'm in agreement with Wes, unless you drove through a puddle or river or somehow got water on the hot parts of your engine? When you say there's smoke coming from the engine, where is it coming from? Is the smoke coming from the exhaust tail pipe or is something leaking from somewhere in the engine compartment and dropping onto something hot and burning off there? If its the latter, have a look around the engine where the 'smoke' is most dense and look for dampness from, for example a tappet cover, a leakage in the cooling system or from the power steering system. If the smoke is coming from the tailpipe, as Wes has said there can be several reasons. The catalytic converter converts the harmful gas into water droplets which become vapour and looks like steam from start up until the engine is partially warmed. If the smoke is blackish grey it will usually mean that too much fuel is being fed into the combustion chamber and is not being burned completely. In the event of that happening a fault code should be recorded, but as you have not told us the vehicle you have we don't know how old it is, or if it is fitted with diagnostics. If it has a cat it should have. If the smoke is bluish grey the indication is oil burn. To test that, have someone sit in the car, start the engine and hold the RPM at about 2000. You go to the rear of the vehicle and if the smoke is that colour (bluish grey) suspect either worn piston rings or valve stem oil seals. Don't keep the engine at that RPM for more than 30 seconds, as we don't want to upset the neighbours or damage the engine. Please get in touch with us and let us know more details Regards John (and Wes)
