If the disk is copywrite protected, your recorder is designed to not record be it an rw or whatever disk. Try making the copy with your computer and use DVD Shrink software still available on line. This software will decode and shrink the data to fit your blank. Since the software cannot be updated (legal reasons), it might not work, and you will have to resort to DVD Fab for the decoding process. There should be no hassle with older disks.

You may have had a brief power outage you did not know about. Then the DVD player needs to be unplugged from the wall and started up again or your lens may need to be cleaned Because your dvd player is only made to play region 1 discs and vcd's are region 2. You need to buy a dvd player which will play all region discs or is rated region 0 which is the same. www.dvdenergy.com/index.htm

This is a common problem for all combo units. The high voltage of the TV section attracts large amounts of particulate dust from the air and often it collects inside the DVD unit. The best way to deal with this is to clean the lens of the DVD unit u sing a cotton swab and alcohol. The store bought "cleaners" MAY work, but that is rare. These cleaners are nothing but small brushes embedded into a disc. They attempt to brush off hte dust. This rarely works. Open up the unit (if you feel comfortabel in doing so) to access the DVD section. Remove the top cover and carefully clean the lens. That should resolve the problem.
