Yes! The only time you might reverse that is if your computer failed to boot up from the hard drive.

How do I set the jumpers to make it a slave?

During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup
Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS the scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to IDE-1 means Pri slave escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart
you will have to have master with slave set up
you can find the jumper location next to the power on a hard drive and the settings for plastic jumper location is usually printed on the top of a hard drive
IDE-0 means Pri master
IDE-1 means Pri slave
IDE-2 means Sec master
IDE-3 means Sec slave

slave :::':
note the plastic jumper is ' located at the rear of the hard drive next to the IDE/SATA lead/s

Cant get burner to reconised on pc

Since this is an IDE drive, please check the Master/Slave/Cable Select jumpers, if you've connected the drive in the same cable of your hard drive, you should check its jumper settings, if hard drive is set as Master, the DVD writer it should be as Slave, if the hard disk jumper is set to Cable Select (CS), the DVD should be in the same way too. After this check if DVD drive is identified correctly in BIOS, it's a good idea to set drive detection as Auto, if this all is OK, check its driver in Windows, it must be appear as a DVD-RW drive.

Computer will not detect dvd burner

Is the drive powering up . Is the light on the front of the drive always on.If always on the cable would be put in upside down change either on motherboard's side or on the drive. Is your drive a SATA or IDE. If IDE and the drive is sharing a cable with another drive or HDD then you will have to set the master/slave jumper found behind the drive. Look behind the drive and you will see a jumper with more connectors.

Generally there are three options C/s,Master,Slave. Removing the jumper completely also makes the drive a slave. Make sure the other drive is slave or master and appropriately change on this drive. IF HDD ( Hard disk) is master make this one slave or vice versa. Now windows should be able to find the drive.

I would like to make this a slave so that my 500 GB PATA HardDrive will be the master as that has my operating system and the Plextor PX-716A drive will be the slave?

You need to configure the jumper at the back of the drive as shown in the following picture

Configure the CD/DVD drive as slave, configure the hard drive as Master.

The jumper combination for a slave drive on an LG GSA-4163B

Most CD/DVD drives have a label showing the jumper setting for Master (MA), Slave (SL)and Cable Select (CS).
You only need a single jumper and it is inserted in a vertical position.
There are a group of 6 pins (3 columns of 2 pins) next to the 40 pin IDE connector.
The Slave setting is usually the middle set of pins.

How to detect the hardrive?

Hi,

setup the first drive as slave ( sometimes No Jumper ) then the furthest away drive as Master.
If this fails, and you have 2 IDE Slots on the motherboard. ( Primary/Secondary ) Put 1 drive on primary as Slave. And DVD Rom As Master ( same Cable ) Then put second drive On Secondary IDE Slot. ( Set As Master Or Slave )
If none of these solutions Work For you, check to see if Both Channels are activated in the Bios.

Thankyou For Using Fixya.

Liteon DVD writer & re writer

You can not use cable select without the correct cable. Most "stock" cables are not. So...

An IDE port supports -2- drives (CD, HD, DVD, Etc). If you have 2 drive connected on the ribbon cable then one must be set to master and the other to slave (the little jumper clips on the back). If it's the only drive on that cable, set it to master. Some drive may say Master Only and Master with a slave.
