Trouble shooting a bobbin threading issue for a Singer 5417C
Hi, let me start with a big disclaimer here -- I am a complete novice with this machine and have only used it once or twice, a few years back! Today, I attempted to thread a bobbin, following the instruction book to no avail. I believe I have threaded it correctly, but when I press the foot pedal I only hear a spinning sound inside the machine, even with the bobbin winder stop in place. That said, the bobbin winder pin on my machine looks far shorter than the one on page 10 of my instruction book, which may have nothing to do with my problem. Hmmmm, I'm at a loss. Any ideas?
Bobbin winder on t of machine is not working, not turning. I can hear the motor running inside. Is it a belt broken or a clutch?Bobbin winder on t of machine is not working, not turning. I can hear the motor running inside. Is it a belt broken or a clutch?

You are supposed to take your foot off the controller (or press Stop) after winding a few turns of thread on the bobbin. Trim the excess thread above the bobbin. Then step on the foot controller or press Start. Release the foot pedal again when the machine stops winding the bobbin. See page 28 of the manual for the procedure.
I hope this helps. If you do not have the Release foot controller icon displayed, please add a longer description of the icon or indicate which icon from the trouble-shooting section of the manual that is closer to the one you see. If you have released the foot controller and the icon persists, then something may be wrong with the control pedal. A replacement control pedal is ~$35; see http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/singer-9960-quantum-stylist-parts.aspx .
Hi, not familiar with this machine, but a few tips -
Unthread the machine fully. Remove the bobbin. Is the bobbin thread the same as the top thread? Is it a Quality thread (yes, cheapie thread can give big issues!!) Do you have several different threads wound onto the bobbin?? Is the bobbin thread wound on quite tight? If you push your finger nail into the thread wound onto the bobbin, it must not feel soft or spongy. .... hope this in general helps some!
try changing the needle rethread the machine top & bobbin make sure the bobbin is inserted correctly in the bobbin case make sure the top thread is not coming off the thread take up lever make sure the bobbin is wound correctly if these suggestions don't work, I suggest that you take the machine to a sewing machine shop to have it checked

enter in your model number and download the manual for your machine, threading issues usually either bobbin not in correctly, thread not in tension or machine incorrectly threaded, so review the manual threading instructions and follow them to trouble shoot your machine.
It sounds like you don't have any tension on the thread when winding the bobbin. Make sure that you are running the thread through the tension disc on the top of the machine before going to the bobbin winder.
Have you checked your needle (size, for thread your using, material) It sounds like a tension/settings issue, but could be as simple as poor thread quality. try changing the thread, and rewinding the bobbin. If using a silky material remember you need to back that up and make it stiff. If this and a resetting of tension doesnt work,
Check your left side right side balance (pg 57) Check page 84 on trouble shooting
The E4, error message means the safety device is activated. Machine is locked up due to thread entangled with the bobbin case. Remove the needle plate and bobbin case. Check for any thread around the hook area. Also check your handwheel. It should turn freely. Good Luck
