Starter wiring I have a 92 Jetta 1.8 A/T. The wire on the starter burnt off. DO you have a diagram to show how the wiring should go?

Replace the starter. Starter is bound up and is drawing a lot of amps thus causing the burnt wire smell and wire to be hot.

Here's the link to the starter relay.Here's another link to your wiring diagram,you have 4 fusible links at top of page,they all are coming from the positive battery cable,check them for burtness or swollen wires,replace with same gauge wire.To see if the starter link is burnt,get meter and put positive on positive battery cable at starter and ground black wire and have someone turn key,should say 12 volts or better.

Yes, but don't get starter "solenoid" confused with starter "relay". The circuit should go from the starter switch to the fuse box, to the relay. Then the circuit will either go to the start solenoid or a secondary, larger relay. I am not certain about VW, but many manufacturers are using two switching relays in order to "step up" the load capacity. This is so the actual key-switch only has to control a tiny load, which makes it last longer.
If you do not have an open fuse link, it is time to find a wiring diagram. In my experience, I have always found that if one calls the service manager at the dealership, he/she is happy to provide a photocopy of a wiring diagram. The diagram will make it clear if there is one or two switching relays, and even what color the wires are and so on.

You vehicle works off a standard ignition key which links to a electrical ignition switch. The wire from the switch goes to the starter solenoid. That wire has a fusable link which operates like a fuse. If to many amps surge through this wire it will melt down inside the insulation. The insulation will not melt away causing a headache to most novice mechcanics. Pull on the solenoid wire a few inches away from the solenoid and see if it stretches at least 1/8 of an inch or more. If it does it has an open stopping the continuity to the positive lug to the solenoid preventing it to work. Any auto parts store sells these fusable links. The counterperson will suggest the crimping supplies and tools needed to purchase for this repair

You have no power from the switch to the starter. Check all you wiring that goes through the fire wall and look for burnt connections or just bad connections.

Check for a burnt fuse link Not the fuese but a fuse link, look at the positive cable going to the battery. Sholud be other wires hooked in the rubber end cap. These other wires are fuse links. feel them for a break or use a test light and probe them for power, repair the one thats burnt.

dose you truck have a coded key? (a chip in it?) if it does, your out of luck, the wire is ground switched and will not show anything on the volt meter. Instead, find the small wire from the starter and use that to make your connection
