Feed Dogs, Thread Tangle

I have a Singer portable, mfgd in 1941 (Model AG008912).  After trying to sew over a very heavy seam, feed dogs started bumping against the chrome plate beneath the presser foot. (The plate the needle goes thru.)

Also, when trying to catch bobbin thread, the thread from the needle wraps around the bobbin housing (??-not the bobbin case, but the stationary housing the bobbin case snaps into.)  When the plate is removed, the feed dog moves freely, but the thread still tangles, as described.

I tried replacing the needle, removing the feed dog (couldn't), switching the direction of the threaded bobbin, cleaning & oiling moving parts.

Great if you could tell me how to fix this!  The little machine is a gem.

Thanks, Jeanette

bobbin wont move to connect thread

  • Anonymous Mar 14, 2014

As i took the plate off the bottom of the machine to check if something was missing, I found a padding of fiber around the gear. As I understand it, there is supposed to be a spring to make the feed dogs go back up. That part is missing.

Hi Jeanette! You have a Singer Featherweight--the best sewing machine ever made! (Mine dates from 1950/51 and I wouldn't trade it for the world.) These beautiful, sturdy machines were designed to be easily repairable at home, but you'll need a copy of the Service Manual (get the Instruction manual too, if you don't have one.) Go to www.singer-featherweight.com and check out what they have available.

I had a similar problem (needle thread not catching the bobbin thread) and the problem was that I hadn't put the needle in correctly (flat side to the left). Also, I will occasionally get thread wrapped around the bobbin housing--sewing along just great and then everything comes to a screeching halt. I'm not sure why that happens, but I'm getting pretty good at taking the bobbin housing apart. The manual is pretty clear on how to do it. You can contact me direct at [email protected] for more information.

Thanks!

Robbie

How to drop feed dogs on a singer Maritt sewing machine

Most Singer Merritt sewing machines do not drop the feed dogs. Instead, you place a cover over the feed dogs. Here's one replacement for the cover: https://www.sewingpartsonline.com/feed-cover-plate-singer-360-sewing-machine.aspx . This fits the Merritt 2404 and Merritt 3130, among others.

Many Singer manuals are available here: https://www.singer.com/support . You need the model number to find a manual. The Merrit 2404 manual is here: http://www.singer.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Singer-Merrit-2404.pdf .

Please add a comment with the model number of your sewing machine to find out if a different feed dog cover is needed for your Merritt. I hope this helps.

Singer Heavy Duty 4423; I have put in a fresh needle, I have tried re-threading, feed dog lever is in the up position, there is no lint or thread accumulated in the machine, and it is oiled properly. When...

f Fabric Is Not Feeding Properly

If the machine is not feeding fabric when you start sewing, it could be that the presser foot lifter has not been lowered before stepping on the foot controller. Lower the presser foot and resume sewing.
Another reason the machine may not be feeding fabric is that the feed dogs (or feed teeth) are disengaged, so make sure that they are properly engaged for sewing. (Note: If your machine has drop feed, resume normal sewing by moving the drop feed lever to regular sewing mode, then turn the hand wheel toward you one full revolution to re-engage the feed dogs).
The machine may also not feed fabric if the stitch length control is set to "0". Increase the stitch length setting and resume sewing. Reference - Singer .com. Troubleshooting tips.

My Elna 6000: the needle does not want to move forward or backwards

The needle never moves forward/back on its own for most sewing machines. The needle bar goes up and down. The fabric moves due to the action of the feed dogs. First remove the fabric from under the presser foot. Check for tangled thread wrapped around the feed dogs or fabric/thread going down into the bobbin area in a tangle. Next check if the feed dogs are up. (When the feed dogs are down or covered (on some machines), the machine is in darning mode. The fabric will only move if you move it yourself.) With the fabric out of the way, rotate the hand wheel and check if the feed dogs are moving. Open up the bobbin compartment and clean out any lint, thread or other debris that may be tangling the mechanism. Take off the throat plate and check the feed dogs. A damaged throat plate can stop the feed dogs from moving properly. You may need to replace the throat plate.

For some machines, you may need to make sure that the unit is not in bobbin wind mode. This is usually obvious since the needle bar won't move either.

I hope this helps.

Singer touch tronic 2000 feed dog will not advance fabric

Confirm the feed dogs are raised. Make sure the feed dog teeth, area under the needle plate and the bobbin area are clean of any debris, thread, or buildup. Some machines also have a presser foot pressure adjustment that increases the pressure the presser foot applies to the feed dogs. The feed dogs could be worn (never run the sewing machine without fabric between the presser foot & feed dogs).

Or, the machine has not had a thorough cleaning and oiling recently and the feed dogs are sticking from old oil.

Wheel on right side that controls the needle up and down is very tight...

Hi, Janome 124 - top thread picks up the bobbin thread, motor sounds good. Th feed dogs won't pull fabric (or paper) thru the machine - dogs don't stick up much above the plate. Help please! Jan

Remove the needle plate and clean the feed dogs with a brush...remove any lint and bits of thread.
A couple of drops of sewing machine oil might help to loosen the feed dogs up. (maybe let the oil seep in and then turn the handwheel towards yourself to help things along.
One other thought:
If your machine has feed dog lowering capability you might want to move that lever/switch back and forth a couple of times.
The feed dogs might not appear to raise or lower, but some machines will only re-engage raised feed dogs when the machine starts to stitch.

Also...verify that the presser foot tension isn't too strong/heavy...and temporarily try using a longer stitch length setting.

Thread bunchingup on bottom of material on singer

Hello,
Here are some solutions to try.

* Re-thread your machine
It may be threaded incorrectly.

* Raise your feed dogs If your machine has this feature.

* When you start to sew a seam, hold the upper and bobbin thread tails back and out of the way as you sew your first couple of stitches. This will keep them from getting caught in your machine.

I hope this helps.

Singer model ce100 does not sew with pedal

Check your feed dogs. On the front, left at the bottom is a manaul switch. If you push it to the right it drops the feed dogs, for embroidery and when you push it left it lift the feed dogs. Just remember to turn the handwheel towards you after switching it to the left, until you hear a clicking sound and the feed dogs engage. Hope this solves your problem.
