Trying to reset pc to factory settings. Don't think it has any partitions, as the disc management only lists the main one (though it does say partition in the details), but I just want some advice so I know I'm looking in the right place, especially if any recovery partitions may be hidden.
NOT REASON given to RESET WINDOWS
This PC is 12 years old today, (2006 new)
nor what OS it even is, ? XP , tell me you dont run XP the Virus magnet with over 700 EXPLOITS?
why not RTM page PAGE 82.
the manual shows ever step to do a dell recovery
ever like read that first?
stop trying to find hidden things.
first do the dell recover mode,
on modern PC it has HOT key,
the HOT key , knows how to use that hidden partition
if not damaged by the users (thus the hidden)
or the HDD not bad.
if the PC needs a reload of windows then the first step are HDD tests. or its all just comedy of errors wasted time and grief.
as you can see I am a hardware guy, software to me is changing socks, software is totally expendable )
here it is.

now that we taught you Dell is not dead, Dell has web site (a shock?) and has support for this PC.
fixya is NOT DELL< ok?
my guess page 84
Dell PC Restore by Symantec restores your hard drive to the operating state it was in when you
purchased the computer. Dell PC Restore permanentl
y deletes all data on th
e hard drive and removes
any applications installed after you received the co
mputer. Use PC Restore only if System Restore did
not resolve your operating system problem.
the magic hot key is control + F11
there are 3 restores
dell restore
Symantec restore
and the DELL CD set.
which why works now after 12 long years is any ones guess.
if the harddrive was change out 5 years ago, anything can be here.
and NO OS stated by you at all.
Hi,
you were right. There is a hidden partition for recovery purposes when your computer has OEM OS. You can see it by using partition tools such partition wizard home edition and you can download it for free. After you run this program you will see a recovery partition which is hidden from your sight. Hope this will answer your question.
SOURCE: reset to factory settings
If the system has the original Dell image, then just after the Dell Bios splash screen should be a black screen with w blue bar at the top with www.dell.com at the top.
At that screen press CTRL + F11 to initiate the PC Restore program.

back up all your files first because everything will be wiped out.
Turn on machine, Put the recovery cd on the cd rom drive, before it boots to windows hit the F1 to go into bios, on the startup set the cd rom the primary to boot machine on cd then follow the instructions from there..
SOURCE: Hi. Problem with Dell Inspiron 1501 Model No
NO....
disk supplied by Dell will only help you restore in an emergency....that too if your system is enabled the restore option...before your blunder....
i suggest you re-do the full PC as per my adivse....
first u must make a backup of your critical data if u have any on ur pc on DVD disks....DONT use pendrive...
since ur laptop is in working condition u can do the following in this laptop itself....else u may have to use another PC....
1st go to my shared drive (link below) and download this application....
http://www.4shared.com/file/gTU7Zdj3/boot-cd-iso.html
this is a rar file, unzip this file with winrar....the folder that winzip will create will have a self burn software called "ISO-Burner"
insert a blank CD in the drive (i guess ur laptop has a CD/DVD writer) else u will need another PC to write a CD....
click on the ISO-Burner, it's a self create burn application...it will create a bootable CD with the needed applications....
to wipe ur disk....clean...
.... u must ensure that the CD drive is the 1st boot drive in BIOS ( i guess u know how to do it)
keep the boot cd in the CD drive...switch off and switch on again...and let it boot from the CD....wait...wait...
it will boot and load an application that will have some tools to make the disk factory fit....
select application KILLDISK...on the left panel...select F10 to wipe your disk clean....type in ..."erase-my-data"....and wait...wait...
the process will take aprox 5 hrs for a 100 gb disk....wait and have patience....so if you HD is 200 gb it will be more than 11 hrs to finish....
once done you can replace the cd with the WinXP disk, make partitions, format and create different drives as per you needs and make you machine as good as new...
for more info on how to format and use WinXP pls visit my site
www.sureshayyar.110mb.com
pls revert back and leave a feedback and rating for the solution....it will help me become a "Guru" here on Fixya....
all the best
regards....

You do know only certain models have an os image on their harddrive and it is this that is enabled with F9 whilst booting (or other key)Failing this you will just have to install from external Dvd/Cd rom etc-this is the fact.

No the hidden partions rely on the main partion to have some files still intact to complete a repair of the operating sytem then restores the files back to thair factory settings, to put xp back on you will need the factory recovery cd or dvd. If you buy a copy of xp and install it then ust eht recovery it should restore it to factory with drivers as well.
