I am at wits end. Covered the holes on the side but nothing.Please help.
You might give this a try:
1. Turn your Brother off
2. Open the front cover of the printer
3. Press and hold Go and turn power on. Do not let the button go.
4. When all 3 lights light up, release the Go button.
5. Press the Go button twice (You will see the Ready light blink green every time you press the Go button)
6. All of the lights will light up
7. With all of the lights on, press and release the Go button 5 times (You will see the Ready light blink green every time you press the Go button)
8. The Error light will start blinking (Don't be alarmed. This is expected.)
9. Close door and wait. The printer will cycle through and make the sound it makes when you initially cut it on. After that sound stops, your green Ready light will be on and solid.
10. You are now ready to print.

Probably just like other Brother printers. It is an optical device, sending light through a window in the toner cassette and sensing the amount of light that gets through. High light throughput in this circuit = toner low.

this message normally indicates a physical problem somewhere on the machine, try turning it off for a couple of minutes then back on. if it keeps giving you this message it should at least give you the error number as well

Colored vertical streaks - looks like a transfer belt problem, and it's not user fixable. You may need a new belt unit - you can find it for around US$ 80-120, but you may want to have a technician inspect the unit first, since it could arguably be the drum instead, and you don't want to fork around US$ 100 and replace the wrong part.
You can try showing a printer sample at a print shop; by looking at the streaks it is possible to diagnose drum, fuser or belt problems.

I fail to see why you are covering up the toner sensor led's when you have a new cartridge fitted?
Also if you are using a recycled toner from a very well known uk shop that refills toners and ink then you may well have broken the drive gear that stirs the toner. i have seen this six times and their toners do this.
It could well be one of the pitfuls of recycled toners.
