My frigidare microwave model #FFMV162LB (about 5 years old) stopped working. I was cooking last night, and in the middle of it, the table stopped turning and the heat stopped. The timer still works and the light turns on - just no cooking power. What could be the problem?

The most likely problem is the magnetron. Check your warranty in owners manual, I believe you have five year warranty on magnetron.

Check the plug. If the vault is 110v or 220v etc.

If the plug seems to be right, but still not
working, you should buy a new one
with a good name brand you can trust.
It's better than paying for repairs and future repairs.

We have a 3 year old Cooke and Lewis integrated microwave/grill that has recently stopped working. It starts up but after 5/6 seconds it stops and 'err 5'comes up on the display. Any ideas?

if this was purchased from the likes of B&Q, at the time of purchase, the retailer must ensure that the goods are/were fit for purpose for a period of 6 years from date of purchase. This is regardless of manufactures warranty. Take it back, demand a new one, quoting the above

Microwave stopped working

Probably a problem with the door latch safety system. This happens every so often with our microwave, which is over 25 years old, and otherwise works perfectly.
If yours is new, it may still be under warranty. If not, there are places that specialize in fixing microwave ovens.
If it is an older, or less expensive oven, it might be time for a new one.

New unit used 3 days. Microwave beeps and screen goes to menu, or set time screen. Sometimes changes the date all by itself. Does this in the middle of the night all night long.

I advice you to contact service if it has guarantee. This seems to be a psychological problem about your oven(!). Technical person need to do an electronic research surgery on its board to see if there is any wrong thing.

if out of warranty you can try a simple "fix" . some microwaves are made with a simple fuse on the inside of casing- should be able to remove cover with 4-6 screws and then locate fuse- DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE! If in doubt replace the whole thing.

PS- if dusty inside ,use canned air(for computers or cameras)

Have Spacemaker Microwave--JVM1630WB 004. started cooking ,heard a POP!! , and it did not cook the food. smelled like burnt wires or capacitor. No fire. fuse did not blow. Any suggestions ?

I had the same thing happen to my 20 year old Frigidare microwave (it was 8 years old at the time). Same POP!, same failure. Though I'm handy with electrical, I don't mess around with the innards of a microwave. There are lethal doses of electricity stored in some capacitors even when the device is unplugged. I took mine to an appliance repair shop that works on microwaves. In my case, a high-end capacitor had blown. The repair cost me $80.00. $5.00 for the part, $75.00 for the labor. My microwave is still working 12 years later.

My solution is not pleasant. If you call a tech out to your house, his charge for labor and parts will probably be more than the cost of a new microwave. Taking it to a repair shop is cheaper, but you would want an estimate first which in itself will not be free of charge.

New microwaves have come down in price over the years. Countertop models for as little as $100.00. Over the range models starting at about $250.00.

Whatever you decide, this is going to cost you some money. Your microwave is dead. Good luck and hope I've helped a bit.

Was using it last night to heat something up. When almost done, microwave made a zizt type of sound and went off. I turned it back on and it continued cooking, but I started smelling burned plastic or

More common then you think, i have gone through a couple microwaves in the last ten years, they both failed very similar to what you describe. One popped the breaker one day, reset the breaker and it worked again but had an odd smell to it. I took it apart and couldn't find anything burnt or melted so i tossed it and got a new one, i didn't want a microwave burning the house down! I would suggest unless your really tied to that microwave that you just replace it for safety sake. Four years or forty years old don't matter anymore, i had one microwave, LG brand, that died two months after the warranty expired and it would cost more to repair it then replace the thing!

I have a whirlpool microwave, it is now 11 years old & last night the glass plate that goes in the middle shattered during cooking (not sure why), where can I replace the plate please?

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

I always recommend that folks put food off-center on the turntable to assure more even heating.

It's a stirring action, so imagine how inefficient it would be to stir just by twirling a spoon in the center of your coffee!

Also, when you put your food off-center, you're not putting it in the same spot every time. That will help prevent repeated heating of the the same spot on the glass, which can lead to weakness and cracking. This is most common with microwave popcorn.
