When you move the lever and engage the blades you are also engaging the belt that drives the blades and sits on top of the mowing deck. Chances are that belt either came off one or more rollers, or broke. The only way to check it out is to get down and look on the top of the mowing deck. Get back and let me know what you find.

I read the suggestions, that were were given. there is another suggestion, you may try. The cable, from the cable clutch assembly, coming from under the control panel to the mower deck, may be pinched or crimped. When looking at the cable, you will see the outside, not the inside of the cable. Inside the cable there is a smaller wire cable that actually, engages the mower blades.I had one to kinked, once and it caused the engagement handle hard to move. Hope this helps.Sincerely,Brad Locke

Have model 247.288811 and blades won't engage when the lever is moved forward. Lever feels like nothing is attached.

Most likely either your deck engagement cable is broken or has came the idler pulley.

Blade engagement lever won't disengage

If this is a manual engagment system all the lever does is to pull a jockey wheel into the back of the belt to tention it thus starting the blades to turn, so either the cable is jammed that pulls the jockey wheel in, or the jockey wheel arm is seized and needs freeing off to allow the jockey to to move to the relaxed position.

Blades won't turn when I engage the lever to start them

sounds like the cable may be binding up. or there is an obstruction under it. take it off clean it good and spray some lubricant on all the moving parts. that usually gets the moving again.

The blade engage lever on my 42" craftsman mower will not disengage completely

Get a can of penatating oil and spray the pivot point of the idler arm on the deck. That's the one that moves back and forth when you lift the blade engagement lever.

Blades will not engage

Lever that adjusts height does not make blades turn. You need to engage the blade lever and if you can not tell if the blades are turning then they probably aren't. check belt it could need replacement.
