CS6000-i E5 showed on screen, now my backstitch doesnt work. Is this an adjustment I can make?

There could be a few reasons why your Singer Quantum 9960 is not backstitching. Look at your manual. E usually denotes ERROR. The 5 means it is error #5.

With the grinding sound that you describe, I'd guess that a bearing has failed somewhere in the machine. Some other parts could have been bent and thus rubbing. The electronic controls probably stop the machine due to the excessive current being used to push the mechanism. The E5 error can also indicate that the foot control plug isn't completely plugged in. You should hear two clicks as you push the pin into the receptacle. However, this isn't likely in this case.

Make and Model, backstitching is usually the lever or adjustable know that makes machine go in reverse..usually near front, either underneath where throat is or on front part of machine

change the needle--make sure the needle is the correct one for the fabric
you adjust the top tension for the bobbin thread

Is sewing machine set for buttonhole making? Sounds like it got "confused" in the process of a buttonhole revolution making a reverse stitch, and so you need to change adjustment settings top left, bottom right, remove extension table and turn feed dogs switch back left of machine to UP position.
