You need to download the IntelliPoint driver from the Microsoft Corporation website. After you install this driver, you will be able to use your mouse as normal.

SOURCE: microsoft wireless notebook optical mouse 1024`

I have a Microsoft wireless optical mouse 3000. There is a silver button on the end of the mouse that usually faces you when using the mouse. Press that silver button- while holding the button in, use your fingernail or something to help with gently lifting the main panel on the top part of the mouse. Lift up on the end of the panel that is closest to the silver button. The panel comes entirely off, revealing the inset battery. It took me a while to figure it out since I installed the first battery.. it has lasted over a year. Hope this helps with yours. Have a blessed day!

My green light on the receiver is ON. The mouse battery is new. The red LASER switches with movement. I read all of the posts, than I pulled apart the receiver and the wires were OK. There is a micro-switch in the receiver, so I pushed it when plugged in to the computer. The green light flashes, then I pushed the button on the bottom of the mouse, it connects. To make short of this, do not open the receiver case, just use a pen and push the green "connect" light (must be in USB port), it will activate reset switch and blink. Next, push "connect" on the bottom of mouse.

SOURCE: Microsoft wireless notebook optical mouse 1023 - not working!

If you know that the battery is good then try this next. There is a VERY tiny shark-fin shaped spring-loaded button on the bottom of the mouse that is pressed in, when you insert the receiver, while the mouse is not in use, that turns off the mouse to save the batteries. If you haven't used the mouse in a while, it can get stuck in the in position, so that when you pull out the receiver, it doesn't spring out and turn the mouse on (indicated by the red light on the bottom). If you notice that the light isn't coming on. Just try manually pushing in the little shark-fin thing a couple times to make it spring back out. After a couple times, you should be able to get it unstuck and the red light should come on.

I had the same problem.
Press the button on the underside of the USB, the green light will flash. Now press the reset button on the underside of the mouse. Your mouse should now work.

There is a release button on the mouse that allows you to slide the top back of the mouse off. The button will be on the bottom and labeled "OPEN". Press this as you slide the top cover off. From there you can replace the batteries.

Where's the battery????

If you consider the button and wheel side to be the front -
There is a silver oval button at the back of the mouse. Press it and the top of the mouse just behind the mouse buttons will pop open.
It takes 1 AA battery with the negative side going to the front.
