SOURCE: How can I boot from USB in a Thinkpad T22?

I assume with "boot menu" you mean the BIOS boot menu (the one you get to if you press F12 during start up, before the Windows screen appears.)

  1. Go to "Enter Setup"
  2. Go to "Config", click "Enter"
  3. Go down to "USB", click "Enter"
  4. Make sure that "USB Bios Support" is enabled.
  5. (Hit "Enter" again and choose between "enabled" and "disabled")
  6. Hit "Esc" twice to go back to the main page.
  7. Go down to "Startup", click "Enter"
  8. Choose "Boot"
  9. Check if "USB CD" is in the list of boot options or excluded form booting.
  10. Hit F10, confirm any changes you made (click "Enter" for 'yes') and reboot.
  11. Tap or hold down F12 again and you should see the boot option menu again.

Note: I am not 100% sure if you can boot from a DVD externally.
I booted from the internal DVD drive fine with a Linux LiveCD. It is possible that the T22 BIOS does not support external booting. Check you version - the latest release from IBM is version 16ET32WW (1.12), release date 06/03/2004. You find that info here.

I would really appreciate if you could come back here and leave a comment, so I (and maybe others?) can learn form this ;-)

Good luck!

This indicates a possible memory problem. Reseat the RAM modules and boot up, if OK then the laptop is OK.
If not then :-
If you have two RAM modules, remove both and insert one and boot up, if it is OK then repeat with the other one - this will determine which memory module is faulty.

HI,
Wait for the ThinkPad logo to appear on the screen a few seconds after the boot process begins. Press the "F1" key on your keyboard and you will get access to bios.

USB ports not working in IBM thinkpad R51 series

have you tried dong an OS re-install with another hard drive? this is one way to verify if the USB port is really bad...you need to isolate the software-caused and hardware-caused problems.

Disable boot up password in R51

You could open up the R51 and remove the CMOS battery. This would reset the password.

Here is a link I found that allows one to hack the BIOS password:

Or try this fixya thread:
