Re: Where can I learn to tie rope knots like some sailor...
You can do a little searching online to find tutorials for tying sailing knots. If there is a specific knot that you are looking for I would suggest going to Wikipedia to see the list of knots and then look YouTube or a site like eHow for step by step instructions for how to tie them.

remove starter
get new rope
wind spring DONT LET GO UNTIL DONE
feed in new rope , tie knot in rope, replace handle ,tie knot in that end. NOW YOU CAN LET ROPE RETURN IN SLOWLY
Cross over, around the right side, in back and around the left side, over the front and around the right side, this time putting the fat part behind the frontmost layer you just laid.
Starter rope is sold at home centers like Lowes and Homedepot. It is important to buy the same thickness of rope so that an ample amount will fit into rewind spool(starter rope is sold by size from 3.5 to 6.5) . Remove the starter cover /fan cover if the starter is riveted to fan cover (or just remove the pull rewind if bolted on). With cover removed, notice how the rope enters thru bushing and ties onto spool. Visualize in which direction the spool turns when you pull the rope. This is the direction that you will be winding the spool. Fish out the old rope and wind the spool in the direction mentioned above. The spool will get tighter as you wind. When the spool will not wind another turn, back-off one turn and align hole in spool to bushing on cover. Insert rope thru bushing into hole and tie knot (any knot that will not obstruct motor parts). At this point allow the rewind to take-in the rope to stop at handle. Test your work. The rope will break if you try to start the washer under load. Press trigger on wand to release pressure. Also the rope is stressed when the operator has a very long strong arm and pulls out the rope to bottom out at the knot. Good luck with your repair
- Remove the recoil assy. Depending on engine model you may hae to remove the air shroud with the recoil.
- Remove the broken rope assy from the spool by lifting the knot out of the hole and cut off the knot.
- Pull the remainder of the old rope out of the recoil spool
- Take the remainder of rope out of the pull handle
On the new rop burn the ends with a match. With wet fingers pinch the ends of the rope while hot/melted until it is the same size as the rope. Form a point on the ends
- Install the new rope in the handle by threading it into the handle and tie ONE small knot on the end of the trheaded through rope.
- Pull very hard on the rope until the new knot seats in the handle. Assemble handle.
- PREWIND the spool in the recoil until it stops winding. I.e. max out spring tension but do not over wind it or you will break the spring. Make sure NOT to wind it in the wrong direction or you will break the spring
- Back off the spool until the knot hole is aligned with the rope guide bushing on the outside of the recoil.
- Either use a C-clamp or a 2nd person to hold the pre-wound spool in place.
-Thread the new rope through the outer rope guide and into then through the knot hole in the spool.
-Tie ONE small knot in the rope and pull it HARD back into the knot hole until the knot seats in the knot hole.
-Release C-clamp or have 2nd person let go of the spool. The rope will rewind into the recoil assy.
-reinstall recoil/air shroud on the engine.
That should get you mowing again.

Remove the recoil. Sometimes depending up on model this required complete air shroud removal. Remove the parts of the old rope. Remove the rope fro the rope handle. NOTE the knot in the handle. Brun both ends of the nylon rope with a match and pinch the burned end into as small of circumference as possible. Install new rope into the starter handle and tie the knot. Pull the new rope into the handle until it seats securely.
Prewind the recoil pulley as far as you can easily wind it. Back it off (unwind) just until the rope guide and pulley knot hole are aligned. Then either c-clamp it in place with the rope knot hole aligned with the rope guide hole or have a 2nd person hold it the pretensioned spring and pulley in position. Thread the rope through the rope guide and on into the pulley knot hole. (takes some effort to get it aligned and through the knot hole!) Pull the new rope through the knot hole and tie 1 knot. Pull starter rope and fit knot into pulley knot hole. Release pulley C-clamp or have helper let go of pulley. Rope should rewind into the recoil.
Reinstall recoil / air shroud. Happy mowing!

You do not need any special tools but you do need a third hand somtimes to complete the job.
Here are the basic steps after you remove the starter from the engine: Prepair the new starter rope by burning the end to keeping it from fraying and shape it into a point. Use a rag to shape the point because it will be very hot. (about 5 feet of good qualty starter rope size to match existing. It is sold in sizes form about 3.5 to 6.5) Tie a temp knot on the other end of the new rope. Remove the old rope and align the hole in the spool with the hole on the starter cover and practice incerting the rope thru the guide hole on the cover into hole on the spool . This will be the final action after you wind the spool. You should be able to hold the spool and insert the rope thru both holes and tie a knot while holding the spool in a wound state. Once you have mastered incerting the rope thru both holes and tying a knot you are ready to begin. Wind the spool in the same direction that the spool turns when you pull the rope. You must wind in the correct direction or you may bend the rewind spring out of shape. The spool will begin to tighten as you wind and will eventually stop turning when the spring is fully wound. Once fully wound unwind spool one full turn and stop when hole on spool aligns with hole in cover. Now insert rope as practiced thru both holes and tie knot with free hand or have helping hand. Once knot is tied slowly let spool take rope in untill no more will go in or you reach temp knot. Now tie pull handle and you are done. Good luck

Before you start... transfer the handle assy to the new rope. Remove the old rope and install the new rope just like the old one. Make sure to tie 1 knot in the end of the rope so that the rope ded not pull out of the handle
-Remove the recoil assy. -Remove the old rope. -Wind the spool counter clockwise until it stops -Back up the spool until the rope hole aligns with the rope guide. DO NOT let the spool unwind. It really takes 2 people to do this. -Burn the end of the new rope with a match and very quickly while it is still soft. pinch the end of the rope to make it as small as possible. -Thread the new rope through the rope guide and into the hole for the knot of the spool. -Use a scribe or needle to lift and pull the new rope through the hole -Tie 1 knot in the rope -Pull the knot into the hole in the spool -Let go of the spool and the rope will rewind -Install recoil assy -RETURN TO SERVICE
