CS 1850: when I sew, the upper thread gets tangled and within two inches, the machine starts to make an awful banging sound and then I stop it. If I don't, the needles will break. the bobbin thread isn't getting caughts in the seem....it's not involved, but the top thread is tangled and there are yards and yards of it in loops on the bottom side.
Be sure to install a brand new needle.
Remove the top thread from the machine.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot.
Rethread from the beginning--verify the thread path is correct.
Set the top tension to the midway point and re-test your machine.
If it still will not stitch properly, then it's possible the machine is out of time. Take it for service.
Bird nesting indicates that the needle thread tension is not tight enough
pull the thread out as if threading the needle and the tension is close when there is resistance to pulling the thread

you need to replace your shukle that holds the tread bobbing below.it is either slack or broken . if it is slack then you tighten the little screw that holds a cover that gives the thread tension .if its broken then replace it.once the thread is slack below it will cause your thread to bundle up.
SOURCE: a horrible tangle
This is a bit late, could the bobbin case not be seated properly? You need to put it into place and then turn it clockwise until it seats soundly in the opening. Also, check for burrs...the needle may have left a rough mark on the plastic or metal in the bobbin area. A piece of batting, or even an old knee hi should snag on any rough areas.

Always remember T-N-T. Thread, Needle, Tension. Assuming its threaded properly, is the needle all the way in and facing the right direction? These symptoms also suggest the bobbin may be in the bobbincase upside down thus turning in the wrong direction. Hope this helps.
SOURCE: its like it is getting tangled in bobbin casing
loopy on bottom means upper threading or tension is wrong
SOURCE: Top thread gets caught on crescent piece holding in bobbin case
If you have the manual take a better look at how to put the bobbin in the case,
sounds like you are putting it in wrong,
make sure you put the bobbin in with the thread com-ming off the bobbin in the right direction (left or right) if not put in the right way you will get what you are saying
ALSO: bring up the bobbin thread your self by turning the hand wheal and bring the thread a few inches to the back of the needle and hold when starting to sew the first 2-5 stitches.
when you do not hold the thread the machine will pull the thread in the bobbin area and cause problems.
you will get use to holding and it will get easier.
hope this helps
